YOUR BROTHER IS STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF AFGHANISTAN

Studio 60 is the funniest Sorkin show I've seen so far. Its comedy isn't as obvious as in 30 Rock (which I love) though both shows premiered in the same year with similar premises, but Studio 60 also delivers a compelling character drama. Whitford, Perry, Paulson and Peet are great.

Although it meanders at times. And perhaps falls victim to an awful lot of those Sorkin tropes we keep coming back to. Seeing Matthew Perry get the chance to prove his dramatic worth through Sorkin dialogue is more than enough.

I wish this had lasted longer than one season, but, of course, it was too smart for network television. Only Sorkin could have written this--though it takes 4 or 5 episodes to really hit its stride--and, as good as the cast is generally (okay, Sarah Paulson is not believable for one moment as a comedienne), the writing is the star. Why is it that people love to call shows that exhibit--and require--intelligence "smug"? Never mind, I already know the answer to that,

I'm a huge Sorkin fan, really I am (The West Wing is one of my ten favorite shows ever; The Social Network is my favorite movie of this decade so far), but this show, man, this show... the dialogue still has that great Sorkin rhythm to it, Perry/Whitford chemistry is great, but it's so, so, so smug, so unfunny, so shrill, so disappointing. That said, I rewatched the whole thing last year. Is that weird? YOUR LITTLE BROTHER IS STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF AFGHANISTAN

Doomed to comparisons of the genius West Wing, it didn't have a chance. As a stand alone on its own merits, it's definitely watchable and was better than many shows that lasted longer.
