The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus

A far stranger (yet somehow more compelling) version of Santa's origins than the one we got in Santa Claus is Comin' to Town. Worth a watch simply to see how hypnotically weird a holiday special can be.

A strange story, but it has all of the Rankin & Bass warmness. My nostalgia probably makes me rate this higher than I normally would.

There's a certain charm to The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus, whereby a baby is raised and conditioned by immortal forest beings; almost a Nordic Jungle Book. The animation bears a unique blend of cuteness and creepiness that matches the story and the many songs. There's a lot of mythology contained in the brief 50 minutes, which shouldn't be a surprise knowing Baum was the author of the original tale.

Expands the Santa Claus mythology by exploring his lesser-known background, origins and childhood and early life.

Such a different, unique spin on typical Santa mythos, with the charm you'd expect from something L. Frank Baum came up with. It's weird, but it's good weird. Lots of high-fantasy style, characters with really cool designs, and some genuinely great voice acting as well. The animation is good, the story is enjoyable, and it feels decidedly less commercial than many other holiday specials- kind of pagany, actually. I had a good time with it, but it does end pretty suddenly.
