There is a kind of conversation that cinema has with us that no other art form can have in quite the same way. It is about recognition, that moment when something on screen says what you were feeling without being able to name it, and the simple fact of being named already brings relief. Researchers in psychology and neuroscience have documented what film lovers already knew from experience: fictional narratives activate the same brain circuits as real experiences. When a character cries what you could not cry, your brain registers something similar to what it would register if you yourself had cried. When a character finds courage in an impossible situation, something in your nervous system responds as if the courage were also yours. This program is about films that work as emotional anchors in moments of crisis. Films that people watch when they are at their lowest and that stay with them afterward, not as a pleasant memory but as something that helped them get through. The curatorial criterion for this program is different from any other the Filmoteca has produced. It is the specific combination of two triggers: identification, the feeling that the film knows what you are going through, and relief, the feeling that there is a way out or at least company for what you are living through. The 16 films in this program were chosen by type of emotional need, not by narrative theme. Each block corresponds to a specific state that crisis produces, and each pair of films offers two different responses to the same need. None of them promises a cure in the clinical sense. What they offer is more modest and more real: company, recognition, the sense that others have been where you are and kept going.

This is a list of films Martin Scorsese mentioned approvingly during a long interview with FastCompany magazine in 2011. Note that he didn’t actually claim these constitute a “film school”, or that you need to see them to know anything about film. I’ve taken the liberty to replace “Secrets of the Soul” (1912) with “Secrets of a Soul” (1926), since the former appears to be lost and Scorsese is likely to have meant the latter.
