Utterly retarded. The kind of film that hipster college sophomores "discover" and declare as brilliant social satire while they pretend to find meaning in the most inane non-sequiturs. Cheap gross-out tricks and dime store symbolism. But worst of all, pervaded with a philosophy of "look at me, I'm so different! I dare to BREAK THE RULES!" A willingness to break rules is always an asset, but when that's your raison d'etre, then you're just as much a slave to the rules as anyone else.

Trite, obnoxious, and embarrassingly sophomoric. It's like The Holy Mountain if The Holy Mountain was awful.

Sits on that deplorable branch of surrealism that could easily be embraced by the love generation as a way to skewer bourgeois sensibilities with nonsense and vulgarity. Only snag is, it does not work. The failed art of a bunch of God damn hippies.

The good kind of Decadence. I just wish that my own first sexual experience, would have been proceeded by such events.

Dance the dance of liberation, celebrate lust and birth. Enter the dark night, follow the moon light, carry us like wind, desert the dust, follow through the rust.

Awww.. I love people who hate this movie almost as much as the movie itself. Its a movie about the hidden and very underrated connection between politics and sex. This one is about free sex and anarchy. Its like Saló, only fun!

It takes the flag of -dumb but funny- from action movies and injects into social parable. Remember the pop art poster in the background in child abuse scene? It's exactly that, the loss of meaning by the invention of post modernism, no more, no less.

Sex, food, politics, anarchy, excess. Some of the most sensual sequences ever filmed, a kaleidoscope of blood, sugar and vomit. The ending scene of the nude Carole Laure drowning and masturbating in a tub of chocolate is one of the best things I have ever seen.

As a film of its time, I can appreciate the debauchery and willingness to get wild and dirty, but viewing it now in the internet-age, where I can watch as many videos of people shitting on each other as my heart desires, Sweet Movie struck me as flat and dated. Nowadays, I'd say it lacks the visual oomph! to back up its incoherent silliness. TLDR: Kinda boring, but has enough peculiar sequences to make it watchable.

The political symbolism of this is simply abysmal. It feels very much like an amateur's attempt to stuff in as much symbolic content as possible without actually thinking deeply about what any of it meant. Usually I'm vastly more permissive than the typical viewer when it comes to radical or controversial cinema, but here I must draw the line due to how offensively bad this film is. There are literally no redeeming qualities to such a stupid concept and such a weak execution of it.

when I see the disparaging comments about this movie I realize once again that the left has lost the 60s and couldn’t ride that wave…

What would happen if us adults if we began to act like children? It'd be a disgusting, depraved, sad, messy, free, naive world. What would our children think?

A primera vista se ve interesante, lo que puede llegar a suceder con esta cinta, pero al momento de ser vista se queda corta y siento que hay escenas que estan de mas en este filme

Minimalist and raging , to say the least . Don't watch it if you're not "mal a la head" in some proportion , it won't make any sense to you whatsoever

Initially coherent and then captivating like a train wreck, but leaving one mentally scarred after the dinner scene. Which is done by a real commune. bob thrillin astutely says "It's like The Holy Mountain if The Holy Mountain was awful."

Pornographic, disgusting, wildly insane, this one is best enjoyed if you don't try to organize it into a single meaningful statement. Sweet Movie is an extravagant farce and needs to be appreciated as such.

Works better as a concept than in execution. Makavejev's skill as a director is evident in certain scenes (Anna Planeta with the three kids on her boat, the two lovers getting "stuck" together in the Eiffel Tower) but the film feels almost a bit too indulgent.

Very strange film that is creative, I suppose, but is too silly, sophomoric, and occasionally disturbingly awkward (e.g. kids with woman scene). I suppose there's some sort of political message to be gleaned from this, but it's not very subtle or interesting.

[re-watch 29 May 2018: There are great aspects here, but tbh this is repulsively misogynist and anti-communist-- what with the Nazi's Katyń frame-up film clips, etc., it's not an exaggeration to say this itself is quite literally a Nazi propaganda film... I'm embarrassed I had this at tier 10].

Oof, I really just liked *shocking* stuff as a teenager, I guess. Also, a really stupid allegory for the Soviet Union that takes the laziest approach ever (it's appealing like this pretty girl then she'll kill you!) but hey look, he hates capitalism too! Of course, 17 year old me just liked transgressive stuff being shot with a steadicam. There's plenty of that.
