A tremendous and touching story, well acted, well written, and very emotional. The final act feels rushed and disjointed though, and holds this back from being one of the all-time great feel-good autobiographical films.

Formulaic but generally enjoyable and heartfelt tale relies on a fine cast to paper over some lumps in Fisher's screenplay, especially the abrupt shift from the likable bond developing between Washington and Luke to the search for Fisher's parents; it makes the last act feel like an addendum rather than organic, and dilutes the impact of the potentially emotive material. Washington proves himself a good actor's director, drawing rock-solid and convincing performances from himself and Luke.

Based on the real life experience of screenwriter, this is a typical feel-good movie that doesn't break new grounds, but is still very watchable. A wise father figure is a role Denzel can play in his sleep. Surprisingly newcomer Derek Luke more than hold his own against him as the protagonist, carrying the movie with ease. Like all famous actors Denzel had to try his hand at directing too, with this being his debut. His direction is sufficient, not flashy but in service of the plot.

A well told if uneven film, the acting as good for the most part though Derek Luke was a bit uneven as was the material.

Subtle it is not. Also why even have the Denzel Washington subplot if you're just going to finish it with a few lines of dialogue at the end, they couldn't even give it a few scenes?

Washington is good in this. I happened to fall into this one day, and got drawn into it. Its an alright movie, but nothing spectacular.

OK. Get this. The film explicitly states that light-skinned black children are more likely to get out of foster care because they are more attractive. Then the film institutionalizes this racist standard of beauty by making Denzel's wife and Antwone's girlfriend light-skinned blacks! Just a microcosm of this hypocritical Hollywood bullshit.

It's good, but dislike the constant feeling that we have seen that story before.

Sometimes painful to watch, but always truthful, Atwone Fisher is a touching story with a fantastic breakout performance by Derek Luke.

A very pleasant surprise. Nothing groundbreaking here, but a solid, moving story with excellent performances across the board. My eyes watered up a few times.
