Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus
Fur creates a ravishing imaginary portrait of the visionary artist Diane Arbus. Much as an actual Arbus photo transports us into strange and unfamiliar worlds, Fur travels through the looking glass to explore the transformation of a shy woman into a powerfully original artist. (Picturehouse)

Both Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. are great in this. It's beautifully shot, with cinematography, set design and costumes that are all marvelous. However, it's also pretentious, slow and ultimately feels kinda pointless and empty. I didn't really dislike it as such, but I never truly felt engaged.

Familiar repressed-housewife-breaks-free narrative, as seen Through the Looking Glass. Unusual is good, but skirts w/ the laughably bizarre when Kidman's being "seduced" by Downey's Wookie Casanova. There's also the obnoxious message about artists being such special people that the rest of us peasants should expect 2 be so much collateral damage as they make their way towards greatness. Still, cinematography is so rich& Kidman even more beautiful than usual, that it was all pretty easy 2 watch.

This film, of all things, made me develop a crush on Robert Downey Jr. Considering he's covered in hair throughout most of the film, with only his mouth and (very expressive and smoldering) eyes visible, that either speaks volumes about his performance or some weird sexual kink I never knew I had.

This is a very strange film. The acting is good in the movie but the script is weird. The ending is also lackluster. Overall this is an interesting failure.

Ridiculous in English and in French. We saw this while in France on vacation which made it somewhat amusing but still a silly and odd story.

Unrelated with Diane Airbus, it could be titled Jeanne Doe.

Interesting for the lone fact that actors of this caliber decided to do something so unique and out of the box.

gives you this feeling of a kubrick movie minus kubrick of course...call it 'eyes tightly open' meets 'stepford wives' meets 'the hours'

A very intriguing film. Some people may not get it, but it really resonates with me and I would imagine other people who have felt "different" at one time or another in their life. Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey Jr. are the ones that make this film truly work.

Weird and stupid overall but I did warm to the characters particularly the hair covered one. But I'm sure give me a week and I'll have forgotten I watched this.

"In what seems like a sequel to Birth, we are treated to endless silent close-ups of Kidman's hard, porcelain face struggling to signal girlish repression and longing for release." - Dan Callahan

That's the best thing that can be said about Fur: It feels good when it's over, and if you see it with a smart friend, it's a blast to hash over afterward.

Even though Steven Shainberg had some amazing shots in this movie, Fur was werid and confusing. I highly suggest that you don't waste your time on this movie.

"Imaginary portrait" is director-speak for "making shit up even more than we usually do in biopics". I feel I should be sympaphetic to the story of a talented artist kept down because of her gender, but there are so many of these movies and many much better. Remove the fur (sorry) and there's really just a rather banal love story. I honestly wished that they had gone with the exhibitionist subplot instead and not left the nudist camp at the door.

In a very bizarre and twisted point of view, it's a really great story about self-discovery and love.
