The device of following political and cultural events through the eyes of a boy is a little crudely deployed, and everything tends to be rather on the predictable and formulaic side, but there are still some good moments here, just too few of them.

I'm sorry, but Commie propaganda films have to be a lot better than this for me to like them

Excellent movie for those who don't understand social inequalities in Chile. The scene where they're told one of them will be in university in 5 years while the other one will be picking up trash is short and seems out of context, but it's the real core of the movie imo. There's one awkward scene that lowers my score for this movie, you'll know what I mean. Pinochet was a blight upon the world, and so are the foreign powers who enabled him. Not enough consequences for their crimes.

Its very touching film which takes place in 1973, right before CIA-backed coup in Chile. Can't say it is a very low budget movie but it certainly feels so. Sound effects and amosphere are very genuine. Worth to watch.

YTS.

One of the more honest films I've seen on the subject of social class, shown through the dismal conclusion of the Allende years and beginning of the Pinochet dictatorship. Would have rated higher if it didn't try to titillate men with incest scenes and sacrifice a girl simply to produce an emotional effect on the male characters.

I'm not familiar at all with Chile's political history but I'm a sucker for coming of age films. It's predictable but still great to watch.

Somewhat heavyhanded. Good performances from the children though.

"Like John Boorman's Hope and Glory, Machuca conflates a boy's coming-of-age with a country's social upheavals." - Ed Gonzalez

That's Chile in 1973, and that's Chile today.
