Rare Beasts

It is an offbeat and strange movie. Billie Piper was marvelous in the role. It was obvious the couple had nothing in common and a mismatch. Relationships were strained and forced and held together by desperation and loneliness. Much of it was sad, miserable, tragic, obnoxious or nearly intolerable. But it also had a great deal of optimistic hopefulness and humor. Worth watching if only for a peek into something different.

Piper wears three hats here and succeeds to various degrees. Acting: Great. Writing: Uneven, sometimes inspired, sometimes hokey. Directing: A refreshing jolt of energy injected into the rom-com that outright destroys the format and calls attention to itself in an incredibly endearing--and original--way. I really just wish the script was better because it seems really unsure of itself and doesn't flow. It's not especially funny or dramatic, neither.

Theather like- absolutely cleverly brechtian and not only due to the techniques! Don't assume that it's a romantic comedy. On the contrary, it makes fun of patriarchal presumptions about the body, lifestyle and personality of women.

Rare Beasts is as insufferable as its characters who range from frustratingly annoying to downright arseholes. The films views on the irrationality of love, life and our wants & needs aren't particularly disagreeable; but its presentation in such a pretentious manner that renders the film unlikable. Almost every scene had obnoxious mumbling, unnecessarily extensive dialogue and blaring piano songs. This anti RomCom just doesn't work as a film. The only scene I liked was the wedding dance.
