Sweet Bird of Youth

It seems like Tennessee Williams was only capable of producing melodrama--and of extreme variety at that--laced with or caused by drug abuse and physical abuse. This makes for a one trick pony that ends up being very hit or miss (mostly miss) depending on who's hands it's in. This one lies mostly in the miss category.

Interesting ending was not worth waiting for.

This movie was alright. The acting was really good but I didn't like the ending. I also found this movie took awhile to get going. There were some good moments so I am sitting on the fence on this one.

The characters and themes are quite interesting, but it's such an ugly and poorly made film - which is surprising when I enjoyed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof so much. Blehhhh.

Boy this is campy, but without quite enough verve to be a camp classic. Pauline Kael, right as usual: "This hysterical twaddle features a sadistic attack on Newman, engineered by Heavenly's father (Ed Begley), a crooked political boss, and a climactic telephone soliloquy by Page - we hear her part of a long-distance conversation with Walter Winchell, who convinces her that, far from being a flop in her last picture, she has scored her greatest hit. Rip Torn [is] also involved in the madness."
