Malcolm X (1992) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"Really like the scene where his followers turn in unison at his command in a police station. Where Biopics fail is historical context is lost in favor of relatability for modern audiences - this film is not guilty of that."
The Devil's Advocate (1997) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"I forget how this film ended. If you're a fan of Keanu Reeves it isn't his worst film or performance but not a must-see"
The Departed (2006) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"After watching this I immeadiately watched the Japanese Original 'Infernal Affairs' which is decent but this US version is better. So I'll make it quick: seen Jack Nicholson's crime boss as a meme tons of times; best use of a hit song at the time "Shipping Out to Boston" (give it a listen) Which just edges out Scorcese's previous best using a Eric Clapton middle melody in Good Fellas where the bodies start showing up in Brooklyn since The Departed scene puts the DM tune on amphetamines!"
Breaking Bad (2008) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"Not a bad episode. I prefer Better Call Saul but only because I know someone like the supporting character in that series. If I knew a Jesse Pinkman type I'm sure I would know that charcuter is completely fleshed out."
Clueless (1995) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"An episode of Beverly Hills 90210 based on Jane Austin's Emma. It shouldn't work but it really does."
Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"Arguably prequels are good for kids to get them into the originals. Start them on this film (greens before desert) as it is most action packed plus child favourite ewoks. Introducing yoda and boba fett setting up the mandalorian and tv show of the latter's namesake. The former's imdb is 8.6 while the sequel trilogy ends 6.4 Obi Wan has flashbacks the best of the prequels continued in a new hope IV. While Andor sets up Rogue One 7.8 Avoid prequels and sequels and they'll not be idiots."
A Quiet Place Part II (2021) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"Rare for a simple concept Alien Invasion horror is this completely holds up as a sequel. The film has more of a dramatic middle in a industrial bunker than a basement, while the ending reveals a glimpse of earth after the invasion. Fans of the first film may not like this but it's definitely a conscious choice to differentiate the films and I'm looking forward to the prequel this month."
The Celebration (1998) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"I didn't put 100 to attempt pass as objective. Truthfully this film doesn't deserve to have a point taken off since it not only succeeds in it's aims but, a rarity for film makers, he wrote a manifesto Dogma 95 of that year which as pretentious as that sounds inspired 35 films by individual directors which are worth watching. So is a film that inspired 35 other films. So do yourself a favour and give it a watch. The ending is so shocking even after a quarter century."
Warrior (2011) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"I do not care about MMA but absolutely love this film. After watching this I immeadiately checked Edgerton IMDB and was edified that he's getting lead roles. E plays Tom Hardy's estranged older brother. Impressive by merely holding his own against Hardy's inarticulate rage and the most horrific cinematic depiction of a recovering alcoholic fall off the wagon I have ever seen by Nick Nolte the father abandoned by both sons with good reason."
Shōgun (2024) - Rated 20 Jun 2024
"The series is unique for keeping the rough edges of Thomas Blackthorne our surrogate character leading us through the world of 17th century Feudal Japan. He is outwardly racist, in favour of sectarian violence against Spanish Catholics trading there, petty, pompous and close-minded right to the end of the series. If you've seen Tom Cruise's Last Samurai this show is even more immersive and no offence makes that seem cartoonish even though LS takes place over 150 years later. Well worth the time"
