Nice production values but we saw them already in Dark and ultimately, it was all a dream, like Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and World on a Wire and Total Recall and The Matrix etc. and there's no solid end - I'm guessing they're hoping for another series to do it all again. Sorry if I ruined it for you, but I wish somebody had for me. Would have saved 8 hours.

Not that successful as a whole but enough entertaining characters, multiple nationalities, beautiful sets and volume. The sound track was the best part. Better ending than usually in this kind of stories.

So far it's a mess. Most story elements were directly copied from several other stories, notably The Matrix, Westworld, Black Mirror, and Inception. While each of these stories had their own unique things to say, 1899 combines everything with no order or meaningful intention.

If you are into alchemy you have to be into this show, and, although penned by the same team as Dark, this one is not as dull as the aforementioned.

1899 was mildly reminiscent of Lost; a little chaotic, possibly deeply flawed, and a fun binge-watch. The use of multiple languages was used well, though the acting was a mixed bag. Some of the side characters seem overly-extraneous.

I have very mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, it is literally the Matrix with people just talking in their own language, knowing no one understands them. 1899 started out promising, but slowly descended into mediocrity. And by slowly, I mean the series really dragged. Some things didn't make sense, others were awkward, but the cast was mostly good. I would hesitantly see a second season.

Reuses many elements of DARK, but with too many scenes of running down dark corridors. Two distinctive things: 1) eight or so languages are spoken, so that characters often cannot understand each other and with no “main” language; this could thus be seen as one of the first truly “globalised” productions; 2) no green screens used; instead, scanned, digitalised locations are projected onto screens visible to the actors, a transformation of the filmmaking process that seeps into the story itself.

Excellent concept and cinematography, but the dialog leaves a little to be desired (how many times can a character say, "that's impossible?"). Badly in need of a second season. EDIT: Canceled, guess Netflix had to make room for a teenage dramedy or something. Lowering my score as the first season does not stand well on its own.
