This is not a special but rather an impromptu purging of feelings and thoughts delivered by Dave during his show in Ohio on June 6, 2020. (Netflix)

Powerful monologue dealing with the then omnipresent BLM protests is certainly not "funny" (except in the most fleeting, absurdist way) - Chappelle displays a terrific gift for rhetoric here and, even from the other side of a TV screen, you can feel his working of the crowd like a master. Unfortunately too brief, finishing just as its star is warming up, and lacking any cinematic technique, but still worthwhile.

Poignantly timed and very well spoken, it's moments like this where a comedian like Chappelle is able to transcend celebrity status and simply speaks with the community about tragic events. He's made jokes in the past about people putting too much importance over celebrity endorsements and political involvement, but to acknowledge he didn't even feel he needed to say anything due to how well society itself made a stand for what's right, that was something we needed to hear.

It will disappoint if you're just looking for jokes. But this proves that Chappelle can do more than make us laugh. A powerful and necessary contribution to the national conversation on police brutality.

While not the level of direct humour we are used to Chappelle is using his platform to talk about racial injustice and the brutality caused by the police force. I recommend everyone watch this if you want to know how a comedian sees this.

I don't really know the work of this comedian, but here he succeeds in conveying the anger caused by the homicidal aspects of American policing, and does so without allowing it to turn into resentment, it seems, which isn't easy.
