With the usual humor based on archetypes, pop culture references and random vulgarity that reeks of desperation, American Dad is highly derivative and only occasionally amusing.

I've given it dozens of opportunities at crazy different stages of life - from sex-obsessed high schooler to drunk colleger to chronically depressed working stiff desperate for escapism - and rarely find it redeeming or funny. Possibly never. Something about it embraces what I like least about pop culture these days. And every opportunity I give it with my best attempt at fresh eyes leads to a forced chuckle and a feeling of crushing ennui.

Actually pretty funny, and far better than the Family Guy knock-off people see it as, but I've never enjoyed it enough to seek it out. Great for when you're drunk and TBS is the channel you left on!

Insanely underrated by TV comedy snobs who don't know what they're missing. I REALLY doubt anyone saying this is "just like Family Guy" or whatever has seen ambitious, creative episodes like "Lost in Space," "Rapture's Delight," or "Independent Movie," and went into the show wanting to hate it. Though in the last couple years it has finally, after a near decade-long run of greatness, started to go a little downhill, this show was a vibrant, hilarious and energetic blast for a long time.

After the cut-aways and pop-culture stuff had gotten stale in Family Guy MacFrlane created a new set-up that lent itself more easily to politics, then filled it with exactly the same crap.

It's like Family Guy, but a whole lot shittier.

The most consistent of MacFarlane's shows, almost always delivering some cheap, disposable but entertaining comedy. Never really much stand-out stuff either, but Roger is easily the best character MacFarlane's made and steals every scene he's in.

It's okay. Much like 'Family Guy' it's occasionally very funny, most of the time just passable and every so often awful.

Passes the time, usually with a laugh or two.

Personally I kind of love American Dad. It's like Family Guy but substantially improved. Early AmDad is kind of good, but I've seen like 10 seasons and it just needed to be euthanized earlier.

I mostly hate it but it had a few funny moments. This is the averaged review of all the ratings of moments hated against moments enjoyed.

The show advertised it's 100th episode by promising to kill off 100 characters. If that is not enough for you, they "fulfilled" the promise by at one point having a bus crash. Some fans tried to very generously count the count of minor characters that could possibly die there, and did not reach 50.

This show deserves to be praised for its consistent quality, which is far and away better than what Family Guy transformed to after its revival. Instead, American Dad gets shafted in the same category by those who gave its pilot a chance and decided to ignore the rest of its run. If your sense of humor can't find greatness in Lincoln Lover, Camp Refoogee, Joint Custody, Surro-Gate, Chimdale, or Roy Rogers McFreely, then it needs a very serious tuneup.

A real sense of fun just oozes through this very likeable, sharp and inventive sitcom.

This is probably one of the most uninspired comedies I've ever seen. It has all the tropes you'd expect - idiotic and pompous father, the meek son, the liberal and "intelligent" daughter and the weird animal/creature thing. This formula isn't inherently bad, but when its humor is based around politics and it does a pretty poor job of actually being funny or even intelligible in this regard, it ultimately resorts to the same generic comedy tropes you'd expect in an attempt to be funny.Pure trash.

ricky spanish.... underrated tbh, still uneven but a little better than family guy. hayley's the only weak character, counter-balanced by probably the strongest wife character in any of the animated sitcoms of that generation.
