Yet another Netflix docu-series that would’ve been better cutting down to one long episode. Seems to have gone through the same production mill as many others, leaving you with an unpleasant taste of over-familiarity, and taking a potentially interesting case but failing to approach its subject in the most effective way. There’s something off-putting about the victim too, which has you questioning her statements even though you know they’re true.

ACAB

Hard to talk about without spoiling things, but suffice it to say that I thought they found a unique and interesting way to tell this story that will keep you guessing and intrigued throughout. There are some loose ends that I am curious about.

Good example of the most substantial issue common to streaming docs, particularly true crime: the prioritizing of tidy storytelling over documenting (perhaps in some instances to secure participation and prevent drama). In the couple's book, and as recently as 2022, they said they're convinced that Muller had accomplices, but it's all but forgotten here. Despite being a bit manipulative in a couple of spots with weird visual choices and music cues, this stands out quite well amidst the endless sea of Netflix true crime docs. The story is absolutely batshit insane, gets genuinely creepy at points, and is a solid contribution to ACAB cinema to boot

A very curious case: personally, I’m left with the overarching feeling that Huskins and Quinn did not help themselves in terms of the way and manner in which they presented themselves, exacerbating what was a pretty clear case of the crime authorities making evidence fit a theory. Tells its story in a relatively compelling way (if perhaps a little overlong), though clips of Fincher’s GONE GIRL are a little too obvious a device.

Worth the watch. Predictable but tells a great story about the American police force and how you're allowed to do terrible at your job and stay in power.
