Having won delirious raves from the liberal media for her 1st season's compelling & distinctive portrait of some flawed (but understandable, if not relatable) individuals, Dunham decided to double down & to not just write increasingly loathsome characters, but to paint theIr genuinely privileged mindsets & behaviors as a normal part of growing up. Apparently its overwhelmingly liberal elite fan base is fine w/ trying to normalize awful behavior as long as a feminist is doing it.

Honestly, if I'd watched this dull, unfunny, plotless show about spoiled, hateworthy young New Yorkers in a vacuum, I might have just found it regular-bad. But I lived through the 2012 Girls Storm, when every single TV site on the internet published no less 100 articles about how you are misogynistic subhuman trash if you don't think this show is the greatest masterpiece since The Godfather, so I viciously despite it. Ironically (given the show's title), Adam Driver is the sole bright spot.

Insufferable in some ways but bold in others. The more hate Lena Dunham gets the more I'm inclined to give her support. Note: Claims from resident firebrands PickPocket and ShogunRua about a pedophilic Lena Dunham "raping" her sister show that they are completely incapable of differentiating between play and abuse. For the record, 7 year olds are normally not considered pedophilic child rapists. These are views not shared by both her sister Grace Dunham or any experts on child sexual abuse.

my relationship to this is complicated, but it's still very important to me

I've watched the first season and snippets of later episodes. Adam Driver's pretty great in this but everyone else is various degrees of insufferable. That's an intentional choice on creator Lena Dunham's part. The problem with that choice is this: if your show isn't gratifying, it must at least be edifying, and Girls isn't that, either. The few sparks of delight and humour are snuffed by all of the garbage.

Holy shit, did not realize this would be so divisive. I think the show's pretty damn good to be honest and is taken way too seriously by a lot of people in an overly literal way. Just my opinion; there's obviously valid reasons to dislike it but damn does it make some people whiny.

Too real.

I don't even know how to feel about this show anymore, since it's such a mixed bag of fantastic television and vomitous garbage. Episodes like "One Man's Trash" are examples of how profound and unique this show's voice can be, and then you get all of Season 4 which forces the characters to the most despicable of places. Lena thrives off of discomfort, and now uses 4 seasons' worth of emotional equity as collateral to keep us watching. Oddly enough, it works enough of the time to keep me around.

Easily one of the whitest things I've seen recently

S1: 85, S2: 80, S3: 85, S4: 80, S5: 80, S6: 82

Sometimes funny, sometimes endearing, sometimes really fucking obnoxious. I started resenting the show when it seemed it was cooking up drama even its characters wouldn't contrive left to their own devices.

Can be a great exploratory show and can also be a vapid pile of garbage depending on which episode you happen to be watching. I keep watching because the show attempts to push the envelope, and I'm a fan of any show which does so, but a lot of the time it's done quite poorly, especially in later episodes

No idea why, but I really do enjoy hating all the main characters here.

It's been pretty hit or miss for a while, but the first two seasons are solid. Alex Karpovsky is pretty much the only reason to keep watching at this point. i sort of just wish it would end.
