The Viewing

Ironically, the slow buildup with the characters just sitting around talking is far better than the payoff, which is predictable and rather sloppy. Worth a one-time watch, barely.

Look. It looked good. If not a bit too flashy for my liking at times but the actual script was very average.

It's nice to see Charlene Yi and Eric André get work like this, even if playing somewhat to type. This probably is meant to play like chamber horror, but the dialogue utterly fails to draw the viewer into any of the players, the 1979 setting seems like an afterthought (it literally needs to be spelled out). Neat set and fantastic music does not pull this stiffly performed piece (except for Weller, clearly having a blast) out of the ordinary.

This is a difficult one to rate. On one hand, most of it is a bunch of stylish but uninteresting dialogue sequences that dump exposition on things that aren't even mentioned again. On the other, the ending sequence is monster movie perfection.

As stated in my review for the series as a whole, this is more of a vibe piece than straight up horror (for that, watch The Autopsy). If you like Cosmatos' other stuff you will like this, also great to see Weller as well as Eric Andre playing it reasonably straight. Fantastic music & production design.

Quite a trip -- and I loved the score.
