Very underrated among TV snob crowds. I understand why: It has no hook; the premise is literally just "watch this group of people live their largely ordinary lives." But within that context it is one of the richest, most emotionally rewarding shows I've seen, a show with genuine artistry in its character work and filmmaking; if it's a soap opera it may be the most authentic one ever made. Mae Whitman's performance as Amber is a highlight. Seasons from best to worst: 4, 3, 2, 6, 1, 5.

From the beginning of the show, you could sense that Jason Katims and his fellow writers were trying to create a show that mirrored reality as they saw it. Time and time again, I appreciated that so much. The show felt so honest in its portrayal of this family, that even when they got to the messages that you expected all along, you appreciated them. This show also converted me to a full-fledged Ray Romano fan. The acting all around was superb though, I loved Monica Potter as Kristina.

While the plot in Parenthood may resemble mundane reality, the drama is elevated by good writing, editing and pacing, relatable characters and an ensemble cast that does a great job at capturing every emotional high and low. With such a large cast, the show does a good job of balancing character story-arcs. There is a good amount of levity in the show but it remains consistently a drams in tone. I constantly found myself rooting for characters that weren't necessarily my favourite.

I'd generally tune out until Crosby, the womanizing comic-relief comes on screen. You can have all the family drama, that kind of thing does nothing for me.

W4E1P0S2V1M2A2R2. Reviewing in a hurry before I get really bored, because it does get repetitive and boring (because that's sort of the point--real life). But when it's on, it's on, and the individual highs match any show i've watched. Mae Whitman is a powerhouse, and at least 5 or 6 of the other actors are fantastic. I even came around to Dax Shepard after a couple seasons. And the soundtrack is Scrubs-quality.
