It's not an especially thorough or intellectual examination, which (his own emotional make-up notwithstanding) he would deserve. Instead, we get a reminder of the promise of American cinema, of its tactile, haunting, and sentimental qualities, all encapsulated in the vision of one man.

A kiss-ass documentary about the most liked filmmaker in the history of the medium. I prefer the warts and all approach of film documentaries like "De Palma", "burden of dreams" or "hearts of darkness".

There's nothing here you couldn't find on the special features of Spielberg's DVDs, but this is still useful as an extensive primer on Spielberg's film-making obsessions - unlikely to provide much further insight to those already familiar with his work (apparently the shark didn't work in JAWS? Who knew?) Ironically (probably by design) skips over those films Spielberg is usually reluctant to talk about (ALWAYS, HOOK etc.) Still a pleasant journey, with an exhaustive list of interview subjects.

For fans of Spielberg or filmmaking in general. It's quite popular to shit all over Spielberg because of his commercial appeal, but keep in mind most of the people doing the shitting, really have no relevant expertise or insights into the process. He makes entertaining films and is good at what he does, as evidenced by the testimonies in this film, from actors, directors, producers and critics.

Not necessarily incredibly enlightening, but a fun film for anyone who is a fan of Spielberg. And let's be honest, everyone is.
