A great series that once again shows how the most powerful horror stories have their roots in tragedy, grief, and sadness. ***SPOILERS*** I understand the debate over the ending, but it's actually diabolically brilliant - Hill House wins by tricking the characters into doing exactly what it wants, and the show wins by getting us to think the ending is a happy one (it's not).

Some of the best writing that I've seen in a horror tv show maybe ever, and I think a lot of that has to do with the genius of horror that has become Mike Flanagan. What a talent for the genre. It's a fascinating character study more than it is a horror, but it's creepiness is not to be understated. It does a damn good job, even if sometimes the pacing and reveals feel underwhelming or overly bloated. It's not the greatest show to grace Netflix, but it's up there.

I said "That's fucking stupid" out loud three times during the first episode and almost quit right there, but I kept going and grew to like it considerably more as it progressed. There's some great stuff in here but there's plenty of bullshit too, and overall, the child acting is far better than most of the adult acting. That Mckenna Grace is something special, the way she uses body language to convey her character's disposition is far beyond her years.

A massively overrated show with too much melodrama and too little actual horror. Adding this one to the 'Netflix churns out too much (less than) mediocrity list'. Actually I prefer The Haunting by de Bont more than this. Teehee.

Probably the best thing Flanagan's done. The serialised format is a great fit for his humanistic approach to horror, allowing him plenty of space to develop his characters to the point that I was fully invested in all of them by the end. Makes a hard swerve into overly sentimental territory in the final episode but it had built up enough good will by that point for me to go along with it.

For me, The Haunting of Hill House wasn't a horror, but just a story about life, death and love, with supernatural elements. Beautiful and emotional. The culminations were thrilling and satisfying. The ending was superb - I couldn't ask for anything better.

Ghost stories are really about lingering. You learn to love characters, and then you get to lose them. In terms of shock and horror this first season was pretty one note, but it nailed the melancholy.

On one hand, the series polishes and expands upon horror classics. The script is well-crafted, meticulously thought-out, and full of suspense and psycho-philosophical musings. Flanagan subverts a cliche here, a cliche there, and presents a truly compelling story. But these roads are far too well-worn. There is something uninspiring in this work of diligent revision, not least because the cast, on aggregate, do not particularly shine in their roles.

Occasional jump scares with emotional family drama. Focuses on the "roots" of horror. Nice writing and camera work, but fell short due to acting and sappy-cliché ending. SPOILERS—Nellie's statement about time and each character's trauma suggests a message of inner demons being the "true horror" that follows us everywhere. The mystery of the red room made the ending more satisfying. Great juxtaposition between past & present timelines every episode, which was great for the story

As it sits, this is one of the best Netflix originals out there, and in the horror genre in general (which is very weak) it shines pretty brightly. A few meandering moments don't weigh it down too much.

People rave about this show, but in reality it has many flaws of which some are hard to overcome. The build-up is extremely slow. To categorize this as "horror" seems a bit much as there aren't really any jump scares and honestly there's not much tension at all. The thing that bothered me the most? There's a door that is locked and stays locked just about the entire show through. Get a locksmith in and open that bloody door for crying out loud. This is just plain bad writing.

Would've felt less meandering if numerous repeated scenes were cut out. Great acting, even from the child actors. Some note-worthy camera work, especially in ep 5. Plot felt stupid at times and some of the drama felt flat (Joey, Shirley's scandal). I wish some of the other characters and side plots were more fleshed out, especially the history of the ghosts and the house. Ending was a bit disappointing and sappy. Overall, decent homage to haunted house horror, but lacked depth.

Cute, touching, intelligently written, outstanding acting except for Catherine Parker (Poppy), with a good ambiance but lacking real horror, primarily because of terrible cgi/animation (beetles, dead Nell, boiled eyes etc.). Ep6's long camera shots were extremely well done.

The reasons I’m not rating this higher are due to the pacing and infrequent scares. It really is a very well made show. Mike Flanagan brings some of his writing talent that he used to make Oculus a great mind bender, and absolutely kills it in the directors chair as well. I found myself more interested in the present day characters rather than the flashbacks. There are very few scares as well. Could’ve been much shorter, but at least it wasn’t rushed.

Nothing new. The scares are all things we've seen before over the past decade of horror - I can see inspiration in Insidious, Paranormal Activity, The Others, 1408, Inception and Flanagan's own Oculus - but it's well done, and Flanagan is really good at the whole multiple timeline editing thing (see Oculus).

Fantastic horror series that concentrates more on it's creepy tone and dread than jump scares (although there are a couple of those too). An enjoyable ghost story mystery, the House was a surprisingly effective character here too. With the story perfectly concluded, it really doesn't need a second season so knowing we're getting one is probably the scariest thing about The Haunting of Hill House for me.

Thematically strong with solid horror, THoHH peaks in the funeral episode which almost feels like a theme park VR ride. From then on culminating in the finale it gets fumbled; the personification of the house in the Zelda Fitzgerald ghost, the "turning" of the mother, friendly grandma ghost and the last twentyish minutes are all poorly done. Honorable mention to one of the best jump scares of recent years.

I actually enjoyed this even more the second time around, because I knew what I was getting into and was not expecting Shirley Jackson's story anymore. This is a gorgeous exploration of how trauma can spread in a family, from one generation to another. There are some scares, but to me the emotional pain the characters feel is so much more scary.

This is just so well put together, especially episodes 5&6.. Masterpieces. It's acted well, written well, directed and edited amazingly. Just masterful work on that part. I think the horror is in good taste and not that many easy scares. Very well made series.

Starts out as a quite promising take on the classic with the first few episodes...and then it becomes grey's anatomy with jump scares. Seems like they had only the very minimum of a plan laid out for this and made up the rest as they went along. The results are bafflingly major inconsistencies in plot, characters and tone, and i'm still scratching my head how literally everyone got a happy ending here.

The show has soap opera dramatics, a first world problems "This Is Us" with ghosts. It's competently made but characters are insufferable;they keep on dwelling then dwell about their dwelling. Feels engineered as a resuIt. Makes me feel that this is horror tv show for people who don't watch horror or don't like it. Also don't like the "cattle prod cinema" aspect of it's scare construction: Lingering shots of creepy thing in the background, then a sharp sound and a flash of something spooky.

There was a mountain of supernatural nonsense, heaping helpings of somber music, and a few jump-scares. But for me, what stands out are the precious few scenes of brilliant writing and exceptional acting. Amid the entire season, there were but 2 or 3 exceptional scenes, and much of the rest was boring, dull, and sometimes quite stupid. I liked how the writers played with time in the final episodes. Overall, it was worthwhile, but far from great and too absurd to be scary.

The Haunting of Hill House is great in spite of its flaws. It's genre trappings are often: shove in a bad jump-scare and the story fumbles at the 2-yard line. However, it tells a layered and ambitious story about trauma, grief, and complicated family dynamics by establishing rich and flawed characters which hit close to home for me (I have three siblings) and had me thinking about it well past the end. Parts 5 & 6 might be the greatest back-to-back episodes in television history bar none.

The excellent scares are impressive but few and far between. What had me hooked, however, was the wonderfully told (think 'Lost' meets 'Dolores Claiborne' in terms of transitions between flashbacks and the present) family drama about thoroughly crafted characters that reaches its zenith in the marvellous sixth episode.

Uneven but above par. The present scenes are often permeated with soap opera overtones, the penchant for long-winded, usually hit-and-miss monologues can be tiring and the reveals are by and large arbitrary, underwhelming flashes in the pan. If you're after something super scary, this is certainly not it, yet its strengths (in part thanks to the good cast) are unexpected, namely the first half's vibrant childhood scenes and some of the second's character conflict and inner turmoil boiling over.

Is the house really haunted or is everyone slowly just losing their minds? Not a stereotypical horror. In fact the scares could be quite few and far between but the characters continued to drive the story forward. Every episode seemed to have a scene of snoozefest meandering dialogue but the rest is brilliant.

I got to recognize that technically speaking is outstanding, the camera work awesome. The plot fails a little in bringing more Horror to the mix, I mean, it is more a melodrama with a lot of horror but not that much. The overall is good but I have seen 8 and 9 out of 10 as rating average, not that good. Luke, BEST CHARACTER EVER.

For the most part, this is a chamber drama masquerading as a haunted house horror series. That's not necessarily a bad thing but, if you're expecting scares, you'll be disappointed. It feels a bit cheap--the show takes unnecessary narrative and production shortcuts--but it makes up for that disappointment well enough elsewhere. (However, the digital beetles deserve special mention as being inexcusable.) The last two episodes are the worst of the lot. Overall, this is lovely genre work.

A superior excercise in the horror genre -not a lot to say but hey- with at least one moment worthy of the genre pantheon -end of episode 5. But the ending was so bad and tone deaf that I thought I was in that room myself and that it would never end. Are bad endings a horror staple? Was it a joke?

So incredible! The family dynamic is allowed to explore the full spectrum when it comes to grief, sorrow, coping, and manages to unite in a believable but still realistic way by the end! I was so enamored throughout the entire film, not just with the hundreds of easter eggs, but by how deep the pathos runs through this story, with how enticing its mysteries are, and in the end, how amazingly cathartic things turn out. Absolutely incredible!

As ghost stories go, this is the best. Hill House is Mike Flanagan as his emotions, technical, and subversive best. Even when compared to the legendary 60s telling of the famous novel, this series is top form entertainment from a true master of the genre.
