For those of you that avoided the series because of the previews or to some extent the pilot because of the jokes in space theme, you may want to give it a chance. It's not really a comedy it's more a Star Trek the Next Generation meets Babylon Five with funnier talent than either of those series. I am going to stick with it awhile (through five episodes currently).

Gave it a fair chance for the first six episodes, which were generally dull and inconsequential. The plots have been snooze-inducingly thin, like somebody took a TNG first season script and replaced half of the dialogue with randomly selected grade school banter. And why is MacFarlane still so damn obsessed with pop culture references? When they turned "Avis vs. Hertz" into an episode-spanning joke, I was sure I wasn't a part of this show's target audience.

Revisiting after 5 episodes. After an initial silly pilot episode, starting with ep2, it really really gets into the TNG vibe. Each episode gets better and better and they quickly found a good balance of compelling character development, story telling, likable cast, humor, and heart - all things Star Trek: Discovery is severely lacking. Mischaracterized as a spoof or satire, this an loving homage to Star Trek's optimism, humanity, and regular people in extraordinary situations.

Hmmm.... my rating may go down over time depending on which direction the show goes but in its opening few episodes I've actually found this a decently compelling and entertaining as a sort of lighthearted modern take on TOS/TNG-style Star Trek. I think I will follow this one at least through season 1.

It has improved as it’s gone on and has slowly won me over. To suggest it is some how the Trek that Discovery should have been, as some do, is clearly insane. This is no TNG or DS9 or even Voyager at its worst. It’s derivative, but is good fun and its casual promotion of the rational is nice to see in a not so rational world. S1: 55, S2: 65, S3: 81.

Seth MacFarlane has zero sophistication. It is barely worth watching, but perhaps only because I am a huge Star Trek and Space opera fan. I was hoping this would be fresh and quirky but it falls far short. It would be much better without all of the stupid humor and asinine dialog and plot decisions. Charlize Theron in episode 5 was awesome. But episode 6 returned to the same juvenile stupid nonsense that makes the series tedious and ridiculous. Also, Norm Macdonald's voice stinks up the place.

Some funny jokes here and there, but most of the time it's uber-mediocre. Too often episode starts with a good joke and just goes downhill from there. And MacFarlane is perfect as a cuckolded husband but I don't buy him as a ship's captain. Can't they just keep him on the other side of camera anyway?

It's a poor comedy, but an okay sci-fi. A Star Trek for a dumber century.

Nelle intenzioni una sorta di Star Trek in chiave ironica, che però non è così divertente e anzi spesso risulta un po' ingenuo e superficiale. Nel complesso comunque si guarda volentieri, soprattutto se come me si apprezza Star Trek.

Seth MacFarlane's humour is pretty ham-fisted here and the series leans too heavily on Star Trek in terms of plot and episode structure. I gave up halfway through season two. Actually I didn't even give up but rather didn't care to the extent that I forgot to watch it.

Actually manages to strike a balance between parody of Star Trek and doing its own thing comedically and politically. It makes you have no expectation which leaves you more or less satisfied when it delivers some great bits of entertainment and the occasional heavy handed, comic sans political message.

I gotta say this is much better than I expected. It's oddly similar to Star Trek TNG.

I just about managed the first episode of this rubbish. I enjoy a good Galaxy Quest style tribute/send-up, but this is not what's going on here. If you love Family Guy (I don't), then maybe you'll dig it, but I found it to be cynically derivative, crass and tedious.

This feels like an older Star Trek show with a twist of Black Mirror and a touch of silly comedy on top. Apart from Palicki, this formula is right up my alley. (1 season)

Seasons 1 and 2 are good, but season 3 is really quite great and, aside from the hit and miss humour prevalent throughout the series, nevertheless tackles various sociopolitical and philosophical topics in its writing with aplomb, in addition to having excellent character development, acting, score and overall production. A very worthy unofficial successor (much better than Discovery) to the Star Trek legacy.

Seen through season 3. Also, season 3 was the best yet. Just high quality 90s era Trek writing, and the jokes are almost gone (or even felt appropriate). Every episode of Season 3 (with only one exception) ranks up there with the best of Next Generation, if not better. (S1 7/10, S2 8/10, S3 10/10)

The Orville allows die hard Star Trek fans to cling to idea that their idea of sci-fi is still relevant. The humour is palatable, but the sci-fi is so devoid of nuance & full of agenda that it's painful to watch, whether or not you agree with the laboured point it's trying to make. There are a few good moments, but far more derivative ones, in a show that looks cheap. MacFarlane may be talented but The Moclans are an affront to entertainment. Palicki is good at least. S03 it only gets worse.

Supposedly, this show is a ripoff of Star Trek with juvenile humor tacked on to it and I am sure that's true but I have never watched a single episode of Star Trek so this is all new to me. All I know of that revered show I absorbed from short clips and through other media that reference it, and on this base I'd say that adding low-brow humor to an already shoddy and preachy show like Star Trek can only be an improvement. Rating is based on first season alone.

A lot of people would argue this is the most Star Trek thing that has existed in a long time, and I think they're probably right about that. Like Galaxy Quest, despite primarily being a comedy and parody of Trek, it delivers pretty good stories and characters and I'm always excited to watch the next episode. Season 3 was incredibly good. Hoping it gets a season 4.

I could possibly stand to try some more episodes, but the ones I saw were just people's mundane day-to-day life, they just happened to be on a spaceship.

It's not good as a drama, nor as a comedy. As the seasons progressed, the show became really heavy on the spoon-fed moral and political dilemmas. I feel like this would be perfect to introduce a child to some topics, but for grown ups, it's mostly insulting with how over the top it is.

Early on has a few "ex wife bad" jokes that feel a bit childish but the story is closer to star trek than some of the modern star trek series.

Starts of pretty rough but gets better as it progresses. A much better Trek show than anything Trek related since DS9 ended.
