A monumentally extended wank. Visually the battle scenes impress (CG blood, the capes, the shields), but they don't forgive the shouting, the slow-motion, the self-referencing, the 'sword as a penis' scene, the 'we're NOT gay' scenes, etc. I also want to hear Dilios' entire narration that is supposedly evoking these visuals: 'then this really fat bastard with swords for arms and chains attached to his nipples wearing only a dog collar and loin cloth, like totally chops the generals heads off'

I was shocked to find out that the working title of this film wasn't "300 Abuses of Slow-Motion Photography". Zack Snyder, who previously directed the horrid 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead", is a corporate turd disguising himself as a visionary film-auteur, & his adaptation of Frank Miller's engrossing graphic novel is a tedious and turgid bore. This is the ultimate outing of post-Matrix retardation. Probably the lamest use of green-screen technology to date

After shooting Zack Snyder realized that he only had one hour worth of footage. In a panic, he was very worried and didn't know what to do. He then put almost every scene in slow mo to get the appropriate feature length time and fool millions of people into thinking this was a good movie.

An unfulfilling experiance, it's repetitive and boring. A few great moments aren't enough to carry the film for the entire length. The cast is almost entirely terrible, even for an action movie. 300 was a great disapointment, it failed were Sin City suceeded.

Despite the RIDICULOUS amount of anticipation I had for this movie, it ended up not letting me down at all. It was amazing, one of the most visually stunning things ever (especially on IMAX). It captured the feel of the comic perfectly, and had my jaw dropped and my heart pumping. Yes, it's style over substance, yes it's incredibly shallow, but who gives a fuck. Naysayers be damned, 300 is goddamned incredible.

The movie was incredibly thrilling on the big-screen, but flops a bit on DVD. The visual experience is still marvelous, but the movie feels a bit flat without an audience audibly reacting to its most visceral moments. It's easy to look for some kind of racist War on Terror commentary in the story, but I don't think Snyder or Miller had that intent. The point is to be entertained, and for the most part the film does a fine job of that. Butler owns the screen with all the charm of a young Connery.

If the whole movie had no slow-motion it would be 45 minutes long. A painfully dumb, homophobic, racist, bigoted, misogynistic film that would be campy - and therefore redeemable - if it didn't take itself so seriously. (It might also be a subversive way for Republican morals to interact with homoeroticism, but that's just a theory. I had the time since I spaced out a lot.) The rape scene is criminal. Basically, it pissed me off.

A faithful rendering of the comic book, but of course that means tons of silly posturing. Without the hardbitten narration and dialog of Sin City, this "uber-epic" seems as one dimensional as the comic book page. David Wenham is so hammy in his line delivery, I laughed at almost everything he said. Some fine action sequences, though. There were so many buff dudes getting impaled on giant spears it was practically gay porn.

300 did everything perfectly. It told the story, which happens to be one of the greatest ever told (not an opinion, but rather a fact), in a manner that transitions gloriously to film. The visuals are breath-taking, and the action will shake you. The plot, extended beyond Frank Miller's fantastic book, enriches the emotion and meaning of the story without altering the original Spartan passion. Awesome!

Another perfect adaption of a misogynistic, juvenile Frank Miller book. With added homophobia, as well. It looks just like the pages, and Gerard Butler gives a great Bill the Butcher impression, but the fight scenes got old quick, the rape scene was shameful, and everything else was tedious.

The film seems to operate in two modes: awesome and ridiculous. I liked the hyperstylized look and thought the battle scenes were fantastically done - I especially appreciated that the phalanx fighting was shown before progressing to the more Homeric one on one form. The dialogue is sometimes clever, but a lot of corny and hackneyed stuff could have been cut. Also there are a fair number of ridiculous scenes that made me giggle. All in all, though, a very entertaining feature.

Leonidas was as hot as the scorching Grecian sun shining upon the well-built, oiled bodies of Spartan men. The soundtrack - albeit thieved - was enjoyable but as Wanda would say, to call this movie stupid would be an insult to stupid movies. The corny rape scene left me painfully unconcerned and overall it felt like some cheap, trashy parody with no sense of humour. However, I particularly loved Xerxes' lipstick.

I wonder if it will be remembered as the last barbaric yarp of masculinity, before our feminist society will outbreed the male, while secretly lamenting his demise. This buffed, brutal and stylized take on the myth of the battle of Thermopylae must have threatened the world of fat film critickers, as they promptly evoked the might of Goodwin's law, complaining about the 'fascist' politics. They missed the fact that it's a simple, pretty enjoyable fable, with one of the great memes of the decade.

This is everything that is wrong with films in 90 minutes. What is the point of this pathetic piece of bilge? it neither educates (being woefully inaccurate) or entertains (unless cartoon gorefests are your thing) and portrays "the enemy" as nothing but a bunch of grotesques (and not only the enemy - anyone who is not a "hero"). Gerard Butler does a "George Clooney does Braveheart" impression throughout and the only saving graces are Lena Headey and the artistic design; both stunning

Funny cause its true. No wait, spectacular because its true. Hell of a film, looks fantastic and there's some great fighting. Empire complained about the slow mo being over used but I don't think that's the case. It has its slow moments and I think expanding the love story stuff was a bit much but it has a good pay off so is worth it. Whoever suggested Borat as a "more like this" was high btw. The male cast redefines physical fitness. 300 is really a vehicle to sell homo-erotic man candy to the unwitting straight male American "football" crowd. Redefines awful cinema. Between the nonsensical plot, made up history, constant shouting, the painfully slow-mo HD combat scenes covering for lack of realistic fight choreography, the warning flags should be up. Yes, it's cheesy as hell at some points. Yes, the story is shallow. Yes, at certain times the CGI is subpar (though this is rare, for the most part it's absolutely stunning). However, this doesn't matter. No movie has ever kicked this much ass. It's as if they took the best battle scene of all time, stretched it over 2 hours and made it 10 times better. An epic, mythologically medieval Greek retelling of the ancient confrontational gorefest between the Spartans and Persian army. The cinematography of the battle processions are glorious in appearance. Watching our warriors eradicately extirpate and neutralize the nemesis is quite a contemplation. Everything else is quite filler. The montage explaining Leonidas' rise to kingdom was unneeded too. Not to reference the facist and homoerotic undercurrents. But then again: "This is Sparta!"

Uninspired dialog, but interesting visuals, this movie fails to deliver solid combat scenes (which should have been it's strongest point) or even echo historical accuracy. A single shield push is the only evidence of actual phalanx combat or tactics. The thrown in sci-fi elements are a further detraction. Avoid this film on principle or, if nothing else, it's failure to capture the imagination, spirit, or even significant interest.

By following the Sin City model with 300, Zack Snyder made a film that is garish and silly. Sin City worked because comic creator Frank Miller's original concept was a highly exaggerated version of film noir. Transplanting that drawn-and-inked imagery to the movie screen was simply bringing the concept full circle. More than Sin City ever did, 300 looks like nothing more than a fanboy dream of seeing a favorite comic story manipulated into motion. Beyond that, it has little reason for being.
