The "train chase" sequences in this film are more entertaining and ingenious than any car chase scene I have ever seen or ever expect to see. The parts that don't take place on the railway are great too, but it's those long, perfectly paced train sequences that make this a classic.

This is film entertainment at its best and purest. Action, adventure, drama, comedy, romance, all of the highest caliber. The train chases are some of the most entertaining sequences in film history, with unmatched choreography and stunts to bolster them. The big battle scene at the end is one of the best I've ever seen. There aren't enough superlatives for this movie, but to date it's arguably the best silent film I've seen.

Its heroic gestures are misplaced on the wrong side of history, and indeed evidence exists throughout Keaton's work of an unflattering racism. This film conveniently ignores Civil War sociopolitics, and if the implications are allowed to fall by the wayside, it is certainly one of silent cinema's great marvels. The comedy is mild, but there is unbelievable ingenuity in its scenarios and sights, grandly staged and sustained with the relentless momentum of geometric patterns and daredevil feats.

There's no denying the talent that went into making this, both technical and physical and it has a lot of really funny moments and well executed gags. Despite this I didn't like it as much as Keaton's other films, a few parts felt slow and a confederate protagonist didn't help.

Oh my word, the stunts are dangerous. The train chase bookends are packed to the brim with impeccable timing and astonishing stunts. I laughed in amazement as much as in humour. The story's quite lovely too (even though we're arguably rooting for the South), but hey, it's not the story that will stick in the mind. God, those stunts!

Dazzling and hilarious spectacle of epic proportions. Filled with energy, emotion & wild danger. What it lacks in meaningful subtext, it more than makes up for in pure blissful comedy & excitement. Possibly the greatest chase scenes ever. A fitting benchmark for my 1000th review.

It takes patience to watch silent movies. It's a different pace than what you might be used to, and you have to contend with the placards containing the dialog. However, when it's a Buster Keaton movie, it's an amazing movie. What an athlete! He was the Jackie Chan of the silent era. Watch his stunts and realize there are NO doubles. Even when he takes a railroad tie and throws it at one that's sitting on the tracks, on a moving train...that's just one example of the great stunts in this movie.

What Keaton achieved way back in 1926 is still the Gold Standard for consummate moviemaking. The production is indeed flawless, the gags both funny and jaw-dropping. The plotting even has an ingenious dual chase / role-reversal element that had my brain pleasurably reeling as I watched a real train crash and burn. How this was filmed is anyone's guess. I'm just glad it was.

It's a joy to watch Keaton manipulate trains, cannons and bridges as confidently as if they were hats or brooms. . . but it requires a good print and a sympathetic musical score to enjoy properly (Kino's DVD is best). This is movie is what critics mean when they toss around words like "tour de force".

I was expecting cool stunts and a lot of slapstick type humor but was surprised to find that it is also incredibly well made. Great tracking shots, good editing, great music. Buster's stoneface is possibly the best it has ever been and goes with the film perfectly. The train scenes are some of the best stuff ever filmed.

The image of rural American landscapes and buildings -- plain, flat, hard-edged, like Keaton's face -- provides a solid, sober backdrop to the misadventures of a Confederate Army reject who rescues a hijacked train from a Union raiding party. It's one of the funnier Keaton comedies, but you still might feel that applause, rather than laughter, is more often the appropriate response to Keaton's athletic triumphs over unending obstacles.

Unfair to grade something this old (& w/ such a haphazardly tacked-on score)w/ modern eyes so best2 split the difference.Surely a masterpiece of its time, the film seems mostly anachronistic now- a classic LooneyTunes short's worth of material& storyline stretched out2 almost2 hours.Although the film has wit &the action sequences & stunts can still impress at times, the movie is FAR 2 slowly paced for a modern sensibilty. Still, a genius work 4 its time - w/ Keaton doing all he can 2 entertain.

Well made and years ahead of its time, it's easy to marvel at Keaton's impressive technical accomplishment, especially given the limits of the tools available to him. Mileage varies of course, and I found my appreciation for it exceeded my enjoyment by a considerable margin. Keaton had great presence, but he rarely makes me laugh, and I'd even rate Lloyd higher than him in the laughs department, which is blasphemy in some circles. Thankfully it's briskly paced and features great stunts.

I put this movie off for about two years because I always wanted to save Buster's greatest triumph for last (or close to it), so I suppose that it would be impossible to live up to that kind of anticipation, but in spite of that I fail to see the raves and the high regard of this movie. Do yourself a favor and put your money on Sherlock Jr. that movie trumps this by a mile

"Hi, I'm Buster Keaton, and welcome to Jackass." I have never seen a Keaton film before, but I always imagined he was a tall man. How wrong I was! Amazon Prime had a colourized version of this, and I am sure someone spent a lot of time on it, but it was really ugly. My understanding is that the Civil War was seen differently in 1926, to the point that Keaton changed the original novel's "heroes" from the Union to the Confederacy. That's a big eek!

It's not Keaton's funniest or cleverest film, but it makes sense that it was one of his personal favorites. It has so many things he clearly loved to play with: a historical setting (based on the so called "Great Locomotive Chase" of 1861), dangerous and grandiose stunts, and--of course--trains. (Maybe he really just wanted an excuse to wreck a period locomotive.) The train sequences definitely outshine everything else in the picture, but they're so good that the rest doesn't matter much anyway.

This needs to be retired from the Film Canon. To begin with the lead is a paper thin character who's actually a villainous terrorist more fitting for Birth of a Nation or Gone With the Wind. Next, the picture's logic makes no sense, as the conflict could end via a man on a horse. It's also repetitive as hell as it's just chasing, chasing, and more chasing along with too many repeated visual gags. Lastly, all could be forgiven if it weren't a painfully unfunny drag. Avoid at all costs.

Whether you're talking about "Sherlock Jr." or "The Cameraman" or "Our Hospitality" of "The General," laughs were important to Keaton, but not as much as making the audience feel...something. Love, hate, laughs, sadness, triumph, agony. He may have been a comedian first, but at his finest, he was a storyteller. Watching it with a packed crowd Tuesday night, with an organ providing the fitting accompaniment, he showed why he's one of the best of both we've ever seen.

An absolute technical marvel - yet, the narrative is quite poor. A trait that is typically excusable in silent comedies - as a simplistic plot allows for great gags - but in the case of The General, it just makes the film feel like two - albeit stunning - train chases and little more than that.

Forget Bad Boys, Rush Hour or any other watered down Hollywood blockbuster, The General is a true action comedy. Every spectacular stunt oozes with tangibility, because, after all, it's all real. The sequences with the train and the bridge are epic, exhilarating, and hilarious in their perfectly-timed ingenuity. And it's all topped off with the brilliance of Buster Keaton. To me, 'The General' was more of an action/adventure movie, than a comedy one. Pretty impressive for its time - all the myriad stunts Buster Keaton did on his own, and of course, the perfectly-timed locomotive sequences. Rewatched on February 6th, 2022. Rating changed from 88 to 94. This is truly a masterpiece. Buster Keaton's technical excellence is superior to anybody else. Action and comedy are perfect. However, he doesn't have a message. We can't feel anything about the relationship of Johnnie Gray and Annabelle Lee, or about the Civil War. In much of his films, he literally escapes from emotion. I think that was the only mistake Buster Keaton has ever made.

Buster Keaton delivers a masterpiece with The General, a film about a young man trying to win a woman's heart while simultaneously trying to reclaim his train from some nasty Union spies.
