A passable example of a style (genre?) that I’ll admit isn’t one I gravitate towards, but the animation is pleasant and colourful enough to make the journey painless – the convoluted plotting and non-existent character work give way to reasonably well-staged action sequences, even if the freedom offered to animation is really not taken a great deal of advantage of. Otherwise it fits snugly into a typical post-apocalyptic mould and ticks the boxes appropriately enough.

Let's start off with the animation, it's crap. Well, mostly crap, every once in a while it looks nearly photo-realistic and then BAM, a cel shaded character with big ass eyes, and poorly drawn hair voiced by a mediocre or worse voice actor. I'm probably going to be kinder to the '88 version, but this one left a bad taste. And the confusing, disjointed plot and scenes did not make up for it. It occasionally had some decent music, that counts for something, I guess.

The computer animation is ugly as hell, but the story is complex and interesting. The style has been compared to Ghost in the Shell and that is not completely off base, but GITS is a MUCH better movie. I just found out this was a remake and now I really want to see the original (hopefully with less awful CG). If I can get my hands on the original and that one is better then the rating on this one might drop.

Alright sci fi film. Nothing very exciting.

Not perhaps the deepest movie ever, but it still features utopianism, which I am a sucker for.

Looks neat, but it's entirely exposition. A highlight: General Hades outlines his motivations, history and plans in one short speech, and none of this was even alluded to before that scene.

Appleseed is definitely worth seeing for the visuals alone. While some of the characters don't work, the Duenan, the machines and the action scenes work wonderfully. Unfortunately, the story doesn't equal up. Too many elements are introduced and then discarded in favor of a truly simplistic storyline. They could have done better.

A very forgettable film, aside from the CG animation. The interaction between the two main characters is "meh" at best and it's just hard to care. It doesn't help that I've seen the futuristic utopia storyline done MUCH better in stuff like Ergo Proxy and Texhnolyze.

While the storyline leaves a bit to be desired, the animation quality and atmosphere is the highest I have ever seen of any anime, period. This alone makes it a must-see for anyone even remotely interested in the genre; I have even shown this movie to people who "hate anime" and has on more than one occasion swayed their opinion.

Gorgeously animated but a bit slow. I wish someone would disabuse the Japanese of the notion that elementary philosophy, facile political insight and dodgy spiritualism constitute substance.

Surprisingly not fun. A lot of pseudo-religious symbolism and faux-existentialism wrapped in a shiny, pretty sci-fi/action veneer, it screams potential but fails to deliver because it all seems derivative. Disappointing, although the animation itself makes the plot easier to take.

Not bad visually, but if you're studying multimedia then you might wanna check out something else. All I could see was "Ahh they used this software to do that"... Toe knee :-)

The plot was nothing extraordinary; in fact the movie was quite dull and boring, however the idea of an artificially created bionic race that can harness and suppress the extreme desires of the humankind and bring it to a tranquility and equalibrium phase was interesting.

Most of this 87 comes from the animation, which is awesome, and is probably not as technically advanced as the new Pixar stuff (see, Cars), but it's much more stylized and is gorgeous. Plot is somewhat iffy but it ends with 1 woman taking down a giant robot. A fairly common Japanese gimmick but for others it should be pretty entertaining.

Stunning animation combined with computer graphics give this a polish that few movies can touch. The actual story is rather well telegraphed, the main twist is pretty easy to guess, but no one watches anime for (much) intellectual stimuli. Akira is the exception.

Visually gorgeous yet ultimately shallow, this embodies everything I hate about anime. The CG is great but the cel-shading ends up awkward and stilted; perhaps they should have just painted over the backgrounds? The script is awful as well: it's cheesy as hell, and do we need talky overexplanation of the background story? CG or not, this re-affirms why I stopped watching anime.
