Strays too far and wide for its modest length – this needed to be more in-depth or otherwise better focussed to be successful; what we have is a fairly close observation of a likable group of teens, but outside of the “novelty” deaf point of view, it’s difficult to ascertain or understand the point Ogens is making – if it is just to observe, then unfortunately we just don’t have enough time with these characters to build up the requisite resonance.

Good story. Worth a look.

Good story and structure, excellent sound design.

Interesting look into a unique world. The short runtime means that it never overstays its welcome, but also leaves you wanting a little more. I would have been interested to learn more about the actual football or more about Jalen.

Even though the short documentary highlights the Homecoming king and football star of a deaf school as its main focal point, I found Jalen, the cheer-squad member the most enjoyable and heartwarming person. Jalen is marginalized in almost all aspects of his life and identity (black, deaf and queer) and yet he seems warm and undefeated. I would absolutely be interested to see how Jalen tackles life after high school. In that sense, the documentary - for me - was somewhat a missed opportunity.
