Demons

Uh... wow. This might be the darkest, cruellest, most nihilistic cinematic descent into hell I've ever seen. I can't call it enjoyable, exactly, but it's certainly an effective portrayal of how seeking revenge ultimately destroys a person (and everyone around them). If this movie doesn't shake you a bit, I worry about you. Now for a nice comedy...

A very stark and nihilistic film that's is horror of a different kind. The horror displayed here is the horror of cruel fate and human weakness and the film doesn't shy away from showing every gruesome detail.

An often subdued, slow story, but never boring. Definitely dips well into the darkness. At first you might feel justified for the betrayed man seeking some justice, but then it all descends into madness, into a living hell of bloodshed and death that has no end. This stark black-and-white cinematography works so well for the dark story, as well. It couldn't have been done in any other way. As beautiful as much as it is horrible, in the best way.

Extremely nihilistic - up there with Ran, but on a much smaller scale. Great use of black and white cinematography with the brief exception of the start of the film. Score would be even higher if the plot was somewhat more complex than a clear cut betrayal.

The narrative structure of the film reminds of Shakespearean tragedy, with the foreshadowing and intertwining coincidences and the use of fate and inevitability. It is a structure I respect but don't particularly enjoy. I can put aside those reservations though, and this is a very well done story and film in that vein. The cinematography is stunning, the characterizations interesting and the nihilistic tone adds to the film's darkness and meshes well with its themes and style.

Wow! I am speechless and not sure how to praise this film! I feel like any combination of words wouldn't suffice! A simple revenge story can get as complicated and complex as Demons, so complex that it turns into an anti-revenge story. Just a few films captured the dark side of the human soul since the invention of the camera and Demons is definitely one of them.

One of those tales where everyone, by the end, gets fucked full circle in the ass over a packet of gold. At this point I feel that I've seen the same kind of movie often enough that I'm going to be unimpressed if it's not especially well handled, and I don't just mean 'well wrought', which this certainly is. The weight of an uncompromisingly cynical worldview is often boring for me, and this seems to conform to such a position.

A man gets too heavily involved with the wrong kind of woman, and then money and calculation make their appearance: problems ensue. A bloody reflection on fate and tragedy with some Buddhist-type reflections on dream and reality, this is quite well done, starting slow but eventually coming to life...and death.
