Steven Schoichet (Brody) is browbeaten at every turn, by his family, his dead-end job, the faceless suburb where he still lives at home. That is until he decides to make a change. Ventriloquism. Hey, a dream's a dream. (Artisan Entertainment)

I'm a bit hot and cold when it comes to Brody but he was good as the not-too-bright ventriloquist (not necessarily a backhanded compliment). As usual, the talented Farmiga shines and I liked the fact that the beautiful Jovovich challenges herself in her role as a rebellious misfit. The real treat, though, is the direction of the situational comedy which is simultaneously hilarious and subdued. My kind of quirky.

So, they just wrote quirks on slips of paper and drew them out of a hat, and built a movie around it? I liked all the actors, but the movie stunk of indie stereotype and laziness.

Quirky setup degenerates into overly simplistic situation comedy, and the characters end up taking so familiar paths, that you have to wonder why anyone bothered coming up with the eccentric setting to begin with. The biggest miss is the Brody ventriloquist act that goes nowhere instead of interesting places, twisted and uncomfortable.

A very entertaining, darkly funny, and underrated movie. Brody plays the introvert very well and it might be my favorite Jovovich performance acting wise.

Bad. A spud. The schadefreuden reminder from my girlfriend when she fears I've selected a film for us to watch that we are going to regret. It says more about me than this little film, though.

Good Milla, but otherwise very forgettable, TV-quality romance.

Never a big fan of Adrien Brody. Now I know why.

Flows horribly, has absolutely no setup, and leaves too many loose ends. But I still found myself rooting for all the characters and interesting in the romantic angle of the plot.

It was a little too close for comfort because the family seemed modeled after my own, but that made the funny parts better and canceled out some of the super cheesy parts. It was dangerously close to being a tragicomedy though.
