Ginger and Fred

There was a lot lost in translation here - a lot of the dialog simply wasn't subtitled, at least in the version I saw. But the atmosphere was great and there were poignant moments amid the deliberate bizarreness of the media circus.

Again, a very nostalgic and sentimental Fellini. Mastroianni and Masina are incredible - fabulous performances. The fanfare, the colours, the plethora of performances, the faces of Fellini - all of them are there; the maestro is himself all over again, but at the same time unlike himself too. Interesting and funny commentary on Television.

There are a lot of strange people in this movie. But it never loses focus on the two main characters and their feelings.

Fellini was a complete anachronism in the 80's, so it makes sense that he would relate to this sentimental story about the reunion of an old dancing couple from a bygone era that doubles as a critique of the modern televisual society.M+M are wonderful in their respective roles, and there is much pleasure to be had watching them interact in the same frame. Fellini's lampooning of the stupefying world of TV is amusing but slight, and the film is, rather uncharacteristically, visually unremarkable.

Yecch! When John Harkness talked about how some Fellini films are basically just "Fellini jacking off", he was talking about movies like this. A whole lot of time is spent on lewd Italian commercials, and at least ten minutes is wasted on a gay cross-dressing male who does sexual favors for prison inmates. "Art film"? HA! You don't walk out of a film like this, you out and out FLEE
