The Sinking of the Lusitania

A neat piece of animation, but the portrayal of Germany as THE EMBODIMENT OF EVIL is silly. Yes, 1150 people killed in the sinking of a boat is a terrible thing, but 750,000 Germans starved to death due to the food shortages that were caused by the Allied blockade of Central Powers shipping. I bet the Austro-Hungarian, Turkish, and Bulgarian populaces didn't fare so well, either

Mindblowingly gorgeous and detailed animation, considering how very early this was released.

The animation is cool but what, it appears, was meant to be a serious condemnation of Germany's actions and tribute to the dead comes off as over the top and quaint. The most dastardly deed ever done indeed.

The animation was great, the story not so much.

In so many ways, this is really impressive and ambitious as an advance in the style and technique of animation: the use of cel animation with painted backgrounds, the detailed and stylish look, the sense of perspective, and much stronger composition and editing than just about anything from 1918 (live or animated). If only it had been in service of something better than frantic, dated yellow journalism, it would have been really great; it's still a huge technical and aesthetic achievement.
