After literally inventing the movie musical with The Jazz Singer, Warner Bros. purchased the motion picture rights to the evergreen Sigmund Romberg/Oscar Hammerstein II 2nd operetta The Desert Song. Although the results looked like a photographed stage play (a common failing of early-talkie songfests), the unforgettable Romberg-Hammerstein tunes (The Riff Song, One Alone, the title number) more than carried the day. A typical over the top, knock about slapstick comedy from Matt Sennet. Chester Conklin plays a teacher that spends most of the two reels dealing with classroom hijinks in between flirting with his favorite student and fending off the affections of Louise Fazenda. It ends with a windstorm and people running about, falling through ceilings, getting struck by lightning and many other things that suspend your disbelief.

Chaos reigns in Louise Fazenda's kitchen as the cat stalks and consumes the bird in the cuckoo clock and the baby paints its face with jam. In her next job in a restaurant kitchen, Louise scrambles up her powder puff and her biscuits. The cook orders her to lighten them up.

It's love among the elite in this Keystone from 1915, in which normal-looking people in well-fitting clothes go through the same sort of hi-jinks that the hoi polloi do. It's a couple of minutes before the first weird mustache appears and it took me twice that to recognize that bright eyed, lanky girl with the snub nose as Louise Fazenda.
