ALTERED CARBON is set in a future where consciousness is digitized and stored in cortical stacks implanted in the spine, allowing humans to survive physical death by having their memories and consciousness "re-sleeved" into new bodies. The story follows specially trained "Envoy" soldier Takeshi Kovacs, who is downloaded from an off-world prison and into the body of a disgraced cop at the behest of Laurens Bancroft, a highly influential aristocrat. Good visuals, interesting construct but sadly that is it. They touch many interesting moral and sociological dillemas and sadly do not explore them enough. Main questions are being answered bit too quickly and bit too easilly. All in all, expected bit more after a great trailer. Oh and yeah, Fight scenes are done really good.

An interesting universe, clearly influenced by Bladerunner and Ghost in the Shell. AC takes stabs at thriller twists, sci-fi, social commentary and psychology - but takes to none with any conviction or focus. The result is a watchable and lush world - but not really filled with much at all. AC's only real point seems to be that women are murderous and men are sexual deviants if given enough tech advancement. Hmm.

Drops about 10% score for being a bit weird and snuff movie for the last 2 episodes. Really enjoyed it up until then. Season 2 is less problematic,Mackie is quite good and having more elaboration in the Elders in interesting

(S1 only; not bothering with S2 after secondhand disappintment) Doesn't even try to deny plagiarizing Blade Runner's street scenes, which is fair enough. Everyone is such a stereotype that it's hard to be pulled into the universe by a living, breathing character. Plus the villain's motivations as revealed in the end aren't particularly satisfying. Still the episode with the grandma inhabiting a hairy Nazi was a standout. As it is, The Expanse is still the superior future gumshoe detective show.

Sci-fi gumshoe noir that buys into the notion of uploading brains while endeavouring to critique transhumanist libertarian ideology. Perhaps too narratively jam-packed and the final episode rushes to tie everything together, causing the writing to suffer (too close to the book, maybe?). The whole Lizzie plot (victim's revenge) is rather dull and predictable. Still, not without interest, effort was expended on the Blade Runnerish appearance, and I quite liked Higareda. Found season 2 unwatchable.

Part Blade Runner and part The English Patient. Wait that's not it at all. Its borderline silly with its anime like violence and less than fleshed out relationships but it always has just enough cool factor to keep going. Netflix most ambitious visual production to date.

First season is a murder mystery set in the future and I do like a good murder mystery. Big expensive production design and a tight, if somewhat cliched plot. Second season they try to make it an action thriller set in the future and that's when I kind of lost interest not to mention the plot thread. It's bad enough trying to remember a bunch of characters who you're not really invested in, it's worse when they can change bodies.

Although it cannot replicate the unique 1930s noir/blade runner style sci-fi amalgam of the breathtaking book, it is visually interesting enough to be watched. Kovacs is well depicted, so does the hotel AI(one of the changes to the original material that I actually liked); the rest is tried to be made more dramatic to the detriment of the story. The philosophical undercurrents related to death/body-mind relation are understandably less strong in this format but at least were not let go of.

A good Sci-Fi series with lots of clever ideas, and plenty of action and excitement. The story is engaging and interesting. The storyline allows new characters to roll in to continue the story. Netflix did not have the good sense to continue the story beyond season 2. It's a shame because this was one of the most interesting series to come along in quite a while. I hated the bilingual Spanish parts, but it was well worthwhile and quite entertaining.

The whole climactic revelation and the "hidden" villain is abysmal. I can only guess the second season is going to be horribly bad.

An interesting premise that is brought down by bad pacing and an inconsistent tone. One minute it's a cerebral sci-fi mystery, the next an action-centric gore-fest. Kinnaman isn't a great lead and seems to mumble through the script which frankly isn't much better. Hopefully it will improve in season 2. -> Acting has gotten better, though the dialogue makes characters seem less distinguishable. The plot also seems muddled.

There are lots of really solid ideas here, including especially the sex exploitation that would almost certainly develop in such a world. But the characters were a little flat and a lot of the acting was horribly stilted, which together made it difficult to ever become fully immersed in the world.

It slogged in the beginning and overwhelmed in the ending. Fav episode: the Dia de Los Muertos one, because it gave characters time to breathe. Some awesome fight scenes, some super cheesy flashbacks (and I am all about spirituality, yo!). Not enough exploring how the identities someone has are influenced by different sleeves. Now that would be fascinating to me as a focus.

On the first watch, I absolutely *hated* the mid-season reveal, after the fight at Fight Drome. I felt it was disrespectful to the viewer, cheap, condescending writing that violated things already revealed. On my second watch, years later, I got to appreciate the masterful way that they actually did include and carefully lay out - and hide in plain sight - all the breadcrumbs that support the reveal. The main mystery, Poe, concepts like religion and transsexuality.. all spectacularly done.

Used to be hard to go wrong with a sci-fi, it now people seem to love these broody softboi sweatervest antiheroes & their predictably tortured pasts. Didn’t enjoy the writing or directing; found the overall ambience too self-consciously gritty, straight off the assembly line at a dystopia factory.

An incredible cyberpunk sci-fi universe painted like Blade Runner, with old school detective vibes. The first six episodes are nearly perfect. The big reveal is somewhat disappointing though, with the cerebral atmosphere being abandoned for a more physical tone with (admittedly) well-choreographed fights. The shift knocks it down a few points. Still, a visually impressive -- and depressive -- image of the future.

There are a few good episodes where the schlock is cranked up- a woman with a brand new bionic arm is able to pick people up with it never mind the rest of her body lacks enhancement (classic sci-fi cliche), a ninja appears a few minutes later while Max Headroom oversees the proceedings, and then a battle with a naked clone army later on. The rest is dreary Blade Runner mixed with a some Elysium minus any subtlety. Better than the book. Original sleeve for Takeshi outshines his contemporary.

Looks nice, first series starts interestingly, gets boring in the middle then last 3 episodes are great. World is believable and realistic, except for some of the VR happenings, and some nice stories develop.
