Hijack

Absolutely pathetic britslop. Not only are baffling character decisions and writing errors made in virtually every scene, it also generally has a total lack of balls and that bothers me even more. Tepid and safe very much like one of those Christian propaganda movies. It’s like the writers are heeding a list of trigger warnings and social instructions, so nothing remarkable ever happens. Seeing the current state of AI, this is too dumb a script for GPT. Surely a human fool made this

Starts out strong enough, like a somewhat more mature and realistic 24, but along the way the contrivances, plotholes and overall flimsy logic starts to pile up as the more cliched genre tropes creep in, culminating in a resolution straight out of a 90s action movie starring some generic action hero. It's a shame because always watchable Elba is commanding in the lead, and his (initial) wits over violence approach to dealing with the hijackers is much more interesting.

First season is good for a weekend binge watch.

Quite good. Maybe I just really like Idris Elba's acting.

Outside of the twist direction it takes towards the end, it’s pretty familiar territory, with the fact that it’s a series being the only thing to set it apart. Its biggest issue by far is the writing, which features plenty of plot contrivances and baffling character decisions, two of which would’ve ended the series in the first two episodes. This is made worse by the fact that there’s no payoff to these two decisions, they were simply bad mistakes. Entertaining, but that’s about it.

Solid first couple of episodes, downhill from there

Decently exciting popcorn thriller series with a few instances of sincerely interesting ethical questions.

Hijack doesn't exactly break any new ground, but it's effective and has some great character moments, bolstered by strong acting. Occasionally, the series does venture into the ridiculous territory with some convenient plotholes glossed over, but when it focuses on the different backstories and personalities of the passengers in peril, it is at its best. The real-time pacing of the show also adds to the tension and I felt was handled perfectly, especially bouncing between different locations.

The plot kept going down the drain.
