A likable cast and good mix of drama and humor. It waned greatly towards the end with constant preachiness but given its long run, it went out better than 90 percent of TV shows.

Would have been a lot better without the preaching and Alan Alda taking control of the show

I've never done a full series watch-through or anything, but back in the early 90s (pre-internet days) one TV channel aired two reruns every night at midnight, so as someone with insomnia/poor sleep habits I ended up watching quite a lot of episodes that way. I liked it!

I don't really know why I'm rating this lower than the movie, because I think I liked it better than the movie. But there you are. We can be irrational like that.

While greatly moderated for television, a little of the anarchic spirit of the film (I've not read the book) is present in the early seasons. After the replacement of the comedic characters played by McLean Stevenson and especially Wayne Rogers, however, the show became progressively more sentimental and increasingly focused on Hawkeye's sermonising and Hunnicutt's emotional travails, decisions that were not to the program's or the viewer's benefit.
