Trevor is a 16 year old, sometimes-violent skinhead with no regard for authority, and would rather spend his time stealing cars than sitting in the detention centre to which he is sent. His social worker, Harry Parker, tries to do his best, but Trevor is only interested when there's something that he can get out of it. The authorities within the centre try to make Trevor conform to the norms of society, but he takes no notice, and would rather speak in a torrent of four-letter words and racial abuse. (imdb)

If you've been following my reviews you'll know I _hate_ movies about pathetic fuckups. And this guy's a fuckup all right. But he isn't pathetic - he's anger-fueled, stubbornly deviant, nihilistic, sadomasochistic and at the same time smart and cunning. This richness of Trevor's persona is owed to the outstanding brilliance of Tim Roth's acting. Like its main character the film never gets anywhere, but I guess that's the whole point, innit?

Very smart movie following the failed attempts by the establishment to rehabilitate a juvenile delinquent. When the staff of an assessment center are authoritative with Trevor, this only fuels his rebelliousness. He craves the strict discipline, which serves to spur him on. The film portrays a corrective system which espouses conformity to rules, but fails, perhaps because it never tries to discusses ideas or feelings with the teen. Thank you Alan Clarke for discovering Tim Roth.

I'm glad this isn't a redemption story as characters this disgusting don't deserve the redemption or sympathy that other films throw at them. That being said, there isn't much of a story in this shortish runtime. Seems like it was almost built as a one-act play centered around the standout chalkboard scene with narrative arcs left by the wayside.

Notable for Roth's first movie, and came out at a time when rebellious youths were stock characters and skinheads were portrayed as simplistic villains with evil motives. I can get behind an attempt at an accurate portrayal of a skinhead, sure, and Roth pulls off the role. There's something here, written into his character, it's got depth--even if he is an asshole who deserved what he got. He's basically a proto-SJW. "I'm special, I won't do anything for society, but society owes me extra."

This examines the situation extremely well. You got this smart, but ultimately misguided teen and he's stuck in these facilities to try to correct him. The anti-establishment shit he spews is sometimes so spot-on, but yet he's still ultimately a completely racist dick. It shows the character as gray, and there's a great performance by Roth to bring him alive. It's a gritty, intelligent movie, that doesn't go far, but it makes logical sense.

I wasn't particularly inspired by the film, but it's decent. It works as a critique of the rehabilitation and incarceration system, even if it's not necessarily enlightening. Trevor is a good representation of what this broken system can turn people into.

This TV movie with a pretty short run-time puts shite like Romper Stomper and American History X to shame. It's an honest and respectful treatment of a subject that so often is exploited through the ultimate redemption device, rendered as a morality story, or over-emphasises a sympathetic element. Clarke puts pathos to bed and shows us an ethos. Roth explodes out of every frame in a really powerful performance.

Films about racists just ain't they used to be -- neither are films about tough love towards teenagers. The centrepiece scene here, where our main man gets interrogated about his beliefs and actions by two stern counselors, demonstrates the conviction of this work of fiction about not simply hostile race relations, but the utmost of youth rebellion.

"Bollocks!!!" That scene with the blackboard definitely sums up all such situations when you're 16: part of it true and part of it total crap.
