This well-made horror pastiche which robs the graves of gothic literature classics was more or less kept afloat for me by Timothy Dalton, but I chose to abandon it after the season 2 pilot.

S1: 50 | S2: 57.5 | S3: 67.5 Interesting time period and ideas, hit or miss characters and mostly slow pacing. The first season mostly dragged, with the exception of the finale being my favorite episode of the series. Second season showed potential, but could’ve done with fewer episodes. Third season almost nailed the pacing, the ending being just okay didn’t really help or hurt it though. Even though Green is a solid actress, I never cared for her character as much as Dalton and Hartnett.

Wackily good, it keeps you entertained with Rory Kinnear stealing the show.

Slick, successful and a wee bit pretentious, but give me pretentious over not trying hard enough every time. Has to bend over backwards to avoid being too actionable a rip-off of Alan Moore's League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but even so manages to be more respectful of that material than the miserable theatrical film of the same name. The great Eva Green turns herself inside out. Even so, I think I like the Sean Bean vehicle Frankenstein Chronicles even better...

A mish-mash of creatures and characters from classic horror stories dropped into Victorian London. It mostly works but occasionally chases its own tail. Billie Piper though... why?

Eva Green and Timothy Dalton in one show is almost too much goodness to deal with. I don't feel like the so-so gothic horror show around them really lives up to their greatness though.

This show has a lot of sex and a lot of blood. And if there's two things I hate in a show, is a lot of sex and gore that isn't necessary to the plot. Penny Dreadful doesn't have that issue, though. Theres' a LOT going on in this show, and never is there a throwaway scene. Fantastic storytelling, great production, and it ended before it ever hit a lull.

Even Eva Green on full power is not able to save this from an obvious lack of a plan and a really shoddy finale.

The first two seasons had too much poetry and philosophy and not enough horror. The third season was the best. It's unfortunate they cancelled the series after they finally got it right.

Masterpiece, hands down. One of the best series ever. Take your time and dare to enter the dark world of XIX literature terrors. You will not regret this. Amazing.

Penny Dreadful is a Victorian period drama that combines vampires and werewolves, witches and immortals, monstrosities and humanity, dropping in some familiar characters and creating a slew of new ones. Dalton and Green are entertaining enough, but Kinnear is a dramatic tour-de-force, stealing every scene he's in. The pace varies each episode, but it's the writing and performances that make the show so good, though it is very noticeable when they fall through.

Eva Green!

I love stories that involve supernatural elements, and this one is my favorite thus far. Dark and emotional, yet beautiful. The acting was very good and the characters really draw you in. I would say the writers wrapped it up nicely, though I feel a few more loose ends should have been tied up as well. If you have a deep interest of the supernatural, or stories that give you a glimpse into the souls of it's characters and the blurry lines between good and evil, then I highly recommend.

Use of famous characters was underwhelming, but highbrow dialogues recited by such fine actors -except Mr. Harnett, sorry- can weave a spell. And there's also the thick gothicness and the kinkiness. And Mr. Korzeniowski. Season 3 was a clear disappointment, and the poorness of the rushed ending has to be seen to be believed.

Half "American Horror Story," half "League of Extraordinary Gentleman." Sometimes the acting/writing is very tight and other times it's painfully overwrought. Good production quality, but it never does anything amazing with it. It's kind of a mixed bag and it just kinda leaves me feeling "meh" about it overall. Something to watch if there's nothing else available.

Some effective scenes (and builds on the premise of Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen far better than the ill-fated movie did), but it just doesn't cohere into a greater whole. Hartnett and Piper were mediocre and everyone else - especially Eva Green - constantly chewing the scenery lessened the impact of everything. Final episode is up there with GoT S8 for writers going "aaah, fuck this".
