Did NOT blow my mind. Apparently this is a cult movie now?

eXistenZ came out the same year as The Matrix and the two films get compared to each other quite a bit. I love The Matrix but I have a soft spot for eXistenZ, which is kind of like it's nerdy little brother. It has a funky energy and a momentum that keeps you guessing right up until the last scene. Like most Cronenberg movies, it's obsessed with human anatomy and modern technology, and explores the different ways that these two fetishes intersect. It's sexy and gross and that's why I like it.

Subtle and thought-provoking, on several levels. If you think you completely "get" this movie, think again.

Dark and atmospheric. Messes up reality pretty good by blurring the line between reality and game world and even stepping into a game within a game, but has some familiar elements flowing through the game worlds as well.

One of those 'fucking with your idea of reality' movies like Cube and 13th Floor that I find so worthwhile to watch.

Some guy went on about how he couldn't stop seeing the bioports on their backs as weirdly sexual after watching this and I was like lol bitch please did you think that was accidental on the film's part welcome to Cronenbergland (3/5)

On the lower end of Cronenberg's work, but strangely fun. This is one of those films if I caught it on TV or pay cable I could not stop watching. Definitely a film of its time, it fairly screams 90's.

Bats around similar themes of technological subsumption as Videodrome. The general story becomes a little muddled but as with any Cronenbourg, there are delightful moments of whirring flesh pods interacting with the hosts. Overall, the movie is a bit too preoccupied with its lore as there's an unavoidable amount of trite exposition throughout. It's ok

I remember that gun in the picture there, and some soup, and maybe something about a game and a gas station. I don't think it was about nogoodnik teens stealing to feed themselves, though. So, forgettable, at any rate.

Solid David Cronenberg-churner that gives us the Mother Canucker's usual sexual metaphors and intelligent commentary mixed in with a good tale of his. It also shows that Cronenberg was possibly getting bored of making trademark "Cronenberg" movies. Thankfully, he proved to idiots that he is much more than that with A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.

Awesomely weird settings & props in the various levels of the world/game, but loses serious points for the cheesy takes on videogames. and possibly the dumbest ending in movie history.

Uneven and awkward, but thoroughly unsettling and provocative, leading to an intense form of entertainment where we play around in disturbing worlds instead of seeing how disturbing our own is. If you like "The Matrix" more than this, check yourself into an asylum for people with Phineas Gage style injuries.

ExistenZ asks the question whether we truly know when we are in reality or not? This is interesting in that if direct VR type connections get made to the human nervous system as Kevin Warwick's work suggests might be one day (soon) possible, this question becomes significantly more pertinent. All in all, this makes for a wonderful cyberpunk flick with some terrific scenes and interesting thoughts.
