I've spent hours trying to convince people that Mufasa is the real villain of The Lion King. Mufasa's policy of expelling the hyenas to barren lands and arguing that the separation follows nature's order is an allegory of apartheid, complete with Bantustans (the wastelands). Mufasa's power basis is that of a Czar: Welfare for the ruling class (lions) at the expense of the underclass (hyenas), combined with religious mysticism (the monkey). Scar is no hero, but the hyena revolt is justified.

This animated Disney classic, portrays the story of Shakespeare's Hamlet in a new, kid-friendly drama, with African lions as the main characters. Simba, the main cub, learns the harsh lessons of life at a young age and attempts to escape this cruel past in a forgotten paradise. Nola, the heroine cub, forces SImba to finally face his history and to fight for everything that is good in the land.

The Lion King is an amazing movie. The combination of animation, and music makes this film appealing to all ages. The very impressive cast including Matthew Broderick, and James Earl Jones embodies these animated characters and make them come alive in this story about growing up and finding yourself. I would defiantly recommend this movie to anyone who likes to laugh or sing and maybe even cry a little.

(2014-15 Disneython #26:) Great movie about the political maneuvering of large cats. Among Disney's best; epic animation, songs with a lot of heart and flair, a pitch-perfect cast (Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones, etc.) in the days before stunt celebrity casting in animated movies, and it has the balls to kill off a major good guy character. Drags juuust a hair when it gets into the love story scene. Still terrific.

Lion Pride is one of kind. This movie has all the aspects of a greatness and it even goes beyond that. As a child, I would always look forward to watching this film and as an adult, I still have the same reaction. All of the characters are audience friendly and lovable. The plot also has great depth attracting a sense of attachment to the film.

A curious, violently manipulative retelling of the history of Soviet Union. Scar represents the spectre of communism, enabling the hyenas/proletariat to kill Mufasa/the Czar. After that everything supposedly goes to shit, the scene where the hyenas snarl at Simba's mother after occupying her home being lifted straight from Dr. Zhivago. In the end, backed by Timon & Pumbaa (the West), Simba (Yeltsin and his oligarchs, i.e. aristocracy evolved into the Chigaco school capitalism) defeats communism.

The first sign that the resurgence of quality Disney movies was over after Howard Ashman bought it. I don't care how ridiculously successful this movie was; it's so... BLAND. Jeremy Irons seems to be enjoying himself tremendously as the villain, but that's about all that is special, here

The first ever movie I saw in the theater, and I went three times. Partially because I loved it, and the rest because I was 3-years-old and couldn't sit through an entire movie at the theater yet. Luckily for me, I had a father who enabled me in my love for this movie throughout my young childhood. I tell you that because despite the beautiful animation, the wonderful songs, and memorable characters with fantastic voice-acting I'm unsure if I can ever fully separate this movie from my nostalgia.

Yeah, The Lion King is a quite good movie. Is it anywhere near a great movie? For kids, sure, but for adults? The story is archetypal enough to be considered a Hamlet homage, so of course it's pretty good. The songs are decent. Timon and Pumbaa are among the most tolerable of Disney's endless amounts of sidekicks. All in all, quite good. But is it a great movie? No.

(2nd viewing) By far one of Disney's worst (without taking the plagiarism aspect into account), I wanted to turn it off after 5 minutes, tedious and unapologetically showy. Why does this film look like Tinkerbell sprayed pixie dust all over it ? Why the fudge do they speak Spanish in Africa ???????????!!!!!!!!!!!! People are so easy to please. The Sega game rocked though :o

Broad characterizations, predictable plotting, black and white morality... there's not a shred of nuance to be found here. I kept waiting for something unexpected to happen, or something amusing, or something touching. Nothing. I felt nothing but a desire for it to end. The jokes are lame and the songs are obnoxious. Some of the performances are decent. As is the animation, which didn't impress me but there were a few nice flourishes. I'm at a loss for anything else kind to say.

Upon review I was surprised to find that the magic has faded somewhat. The artisanship cannot be denied, but if the formula wasn't old then, it certainly is now. The all dancin', all singin' hero, girl and three sidekicks formula seems much less like perfect escapism, and much more like 'buy the cd and get the teddy bears'.

A marvelous film that ranks among Disney's best works. It has a great story with beautiful animation and very likable characters. On top of that, this has some of the best music in any Disney film. And the standout of those is the Circle of Life sequence. Since Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain, Disney has not combined animation and music so well.

The Lion King is without any shadow of a doubt my favourite Disney film and one of my all time favourite films in general. The story telling is unparalleled, the animation is stunning, the characters are timeless and the voice work is arguably Disney's best. Jeremy Irons, James Earl Jones & Rowan Atkinson in particular are superb. And both Elton John's soundtrack and Hans Zimmer's score are spectacular. The collaboration of talents is special and The Lion King is the epitomisation of Disney.

Vile capitalist propaganda criticizing communism and more specifically Stalinism. Notice the references to famine, meticulous planning, the brainwashing of Simba with ideas of "Hakuna Matata" or simply don't worry, the hyenas believe there will be no king but Scar becomes king and so on. Zazu is the bureaucracy and is overworked in the Soviet-Pride Rock where as he is free in the "Libertarian paradise" under Mufasa. It's vile. But saying that music is actually quite good.

I cried when Mufasa died. I used to draw the hyenas all over my notebooks. I named my pet ferret "Timon". I wore a pair of Simba earrings (with a pink Nala t-shirt) in my 4th grade school picture. I had "The Lion King" game for Super NES. I had countless Lion King-themed plush toys. I was nine goddamn years old, I was all over that shit!

It's sentimental, the characters were plagiarized, it has talking animals, and lots of moments designed to tug heart strings. What makes it work is that there is an epic feel to this film that you just don't find with very many animated films these days. It was a modern classic then and it will probably always be regarded as such because of its very memorable qualities such as the soaring Africa themed soundtrack. It's one of the best animated films ever and i'm not a fan of Disney in general.

An overall excellent movie, and a great example of what Disney can do when they really make an effort. A note to those complaining about the similarities to Kimba the White Lion: Do you also complain that Sergio Leone's breakout film A Fistful of Dollars is basically a carbon copy of Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo? And for that matter, Yojimbo is heavily influenced by Noir classic The Glass Key. Cinema is adaptation, everything old is new again, so on and so forth.

Would have been better if the gave Whoopie Goldberg's part to James Earl Jones so than James Earl Jones would have had two parts. Seriously though, this is some of the best voice acting ever done and the animation is spot on. Timon and Pumbaa provide the right amount of comic relief. This does so much right for an animated film. It also has some pretty clear Nazi propaganda, which makes me wonder why people complain about the stars spelling 'SEX' which is a stretch to say the least.

A true masterpiece, and an animation landmark that lead to the maturation of main-stream animation. Extraordinarily creative and imaginative animation (the opening sequence is a masterclass in staging and cinematography by any standard) backed by a peerless voice cast (with Irons' creepy, slithery Scar perhaps the most vividly imagined villian in the Disney canon) and wonderful score. Effortlessly balances amusing comic relief with genuinely devastating tragedy and never puts a foot wrong.
