This is no Spiderman 3, X-men 3, or any other disappointing superhero sequel. Iron Man is pure fun from the very first scene (but I felt the climax was so-so) and RDJ just steals the show. It's a fresh take on the comic book genre, and Jon Favreau is the one to thank for that. Certainly left me looking forward to a follow up.

For better or worse, this movie set the style and tone of all subsequent MCU movies, but what's easy to forget is how big a revelation RDJ was to the general public at the time of release. Much like Tony Stark himself, he's an immensely talented man who spent years battling his personal demons but whose charisma and brilliance could not be denied. An immensely entertaining performance in a movie with high rewatchability.

The good: the cast, technical elements, the three minutes when we get to see Iron Man out in the world. The bad: Screamingly predictable. Terrible depiction of women. Overindulgent; it's an hour before the suit goes on. Tony Stark is an intolerable jerk I couldn't make myself care about. Plus I know it's a superhero movie, but you could make a list a mile long of all the times people would have been maimed if they did in real life what they did in the movie. Stupid, insulting, suspense-free.

Marvel's best origin film. Favreau's direction nails the comic tone beautifully, and Downey owns the screen every time he's on it. The acting is sharp across the board, and Favreau has the good sense to shoot his action at a distance, so we can actually see what's happening. An endlessly entertaining flick that lays the franchise groundwork well. The special effects are excellent -- Stan Winston went out on top. Now bring on The Avengers!

A carefree arms industrialist is brought to the realisation that his products often wind up in the hands of those of whom he disapproves. Shunned by military associates and his own corporation, the systemic flaws and immorality of military-industrial capitalism are exposed. The protagonist's response is thus to create a new, unstoppable weapon in order to destroy other weapons, culminating in a battle with its own prototype, thereby regaining military approval. Patriotic fantasy for our times.

My largest complaint has to be the choice to have generic nu-metal as the filler soundtrack. The opening track and the credits were great but everything else was just awful. Admittedly you could see Jeff Bridges betrayal from about 30 miles away (if this actually spoils anything for you then you're either insane or oblivious). Still Robert Downey Jr. was absolutely fantastic and honestly makes Tony Stark just as awesome outside the suit as inside, very rare in a superhero movie.

I didn't know what to expect. All I've seen of Favreau's work was Elf. But he knows how to direct action films as well; very, very funny action films at that. No one else but Robert Downey, Jr., could've pulled off the Tony Stark character as well. It's really quite terrific.

It's a decent one, but I really don't understand this love around the media and the audiences. It's fun, has slightly good characters and a fine story but nothing more. It's not even close to some other comic book franchises like Spiderman, X-Men or Batman.

There is no person that can watch this movie and ignore it comedic and acting genius. Robert Downey jr. is the perfect man to play the role of Iron Man. If anything helps this movie its the incredibly perfect portrayal of a cocky and self centered Tony Stark by Robert Downey Jr. So just go watch this movie and see for yourself.

Goddamn, I've said it before and I'll just keep saying it, Robert Downey Jr. is fucking awesome. A good 80% of what made this movie so good(and it was definitely good) was him. The whole movie is a damn lot of fun from start to finish, with great action and a lot of comedy. A lot of it is actually just watching a fun guy play with his new toy, but the toy is so fucking cool that it's impossible not to be entertained. I eagerly anticipate Iron Man 2, and any Marvel crossovers they do.

The first hour is a blast, Downey is perfect as Stark, there's exciting action, excellent CGI, mostly natural dialogue, well-paced story. By the end though it becomes entirely too conventional, with an unconvicing villain and climax.

Horrible nu-metal and a distinct lack of great fighting/excitement sequences are my biggest issues with this movie as a blockbuster, but as something more than that it's fantastic, with Downey Jr. really giving the character an absurdly awesome charisma and charm.

Not bad but was expecting more with all the hype. I couldn't get over how similar Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark are. The score was beyond awful and using the crappy Iron Man song is so lame. But it's saved just by being pretty entertaining and RDJ was a great choice for Tony.

While still an awesome slam-bang action explod-aganaza, the narrative subtext makes the film feel intellectually caustic: let's not forget that Stark can only destroy his weapons by blowing them up with even bigger and better weapons. (Dark Knight differs as it discusses the 'violence begets violence' paradigm in length, while Iron Man takes it as assumed.) In Hollywood, the opposite of war is NOT peace, it's boredom: and there Iron Man does not disappoint.

A snapshot of the Big Tech Meritocracy Optimism that defined the start of the 2010s, the manifestation of the belief that the Musks and Starks of the world are the everyman who became benevolent overlords through technical genius. Under this framework, the military industrial complex is conveniently swept away as a common sense good that our hero learns (selling weapons *bad*), even while the film's fascination with supercool weapons continues to openly perpetuate it.

You'd have thought from the trailer that Iron Man would have been a lot worse than it actually was. Though it is surely not the best comic book movie overall it is among the best of the recent heap, which says a lot because there have been so many all of the time. Downy Jr. is an excellent cast for the role of Tony Stark and the action is incredible to watch and always entertaining. It's a well written, fun ride that kicks off the summer in just the right way.

A completely satisfying blockbuster, and a perfect start to the '08 summer movie season. The action is great, and Favreau's wide shots, non-spastic cutting, and smooth cameras during these scenes refreshingly reject the Michael Bay style. Typical superhero action movie, clichéd and predictable and packed with things blowing up and zooming around and flashing lights. The whole movie is just an orgy of computer-generated effects, computer-generated carnage, and computer-generated computers. All these bells and whistles add up to a big fat nothing. I honestly couldn't believe how boring and soulless it all was. The only saving grace is RDJ's light, comic performance. Other than that, a thoroughly empty and joyless experience.

The triumphant return of Robert Downey Jr. and the best action movie of 2008... if it weren't for The Dark Knight. RDJ's self-righteous swagger and humor that eventually gives way to humility and consciousness makes for a superhero character unlike most we've seen on the big screen. Besides that, it's just a blast. Nothing too deep, just great action and genuine comedy. The special effects are clear and sharp and the A-list cast makes Iron Man a leader in the pack of comic book adaptations.

This is about the only comic book movie I've liked, probably because of Downey's wry sense of humor and the fact that the film works against him in so many ways. I also liked that it didn't seem to take itself too seriously. Guys dressed in tights just shouldn't be allowed to make "profound" statements about the meaning of life. Thankfully, this movie doesn't go there, and is happy to be just a solid piece of entertainment.

The fairly simple story is vamped up by RDJ, Bridges and the directing of Favreau. One of the better superhero films I have seen.Edit- - 2nd viewing: It's hard to imagine a decade later that this film started a highly improbable and unparalleled chapter in cinematic history. It launched dozens of spawn encompassing a huge connected universe and absolutely smashed the box office. For better or worse it's a monumental achievement and if Favreau hadn't handled it so well, there may not be a MCU.

On one hand, Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark is a rich asshole, wisecracking his way through a self-centered lifestyle. On the other, he's a brilliant and hardworking recluse who still puts his nose to the grindstone for his company. He's a suitably complex leading man for a film that's otherwise quite standard (though still with some great action) and his moral transformation-while a bit simplistic-perfects him as a protagonist while still taking care to retain the charisma we've grown to love/hate.

The birth of the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" started with a beautiful marriage, one between Robert Downey Jr. and the character of Tony Stark. Arguably the role Downey was born to play, his soul mate in Stark along with his spirit animal "Iron Man" lined up to be the perfect beginning to the now billion dollar Marvel + Disney industry. Jon Favreau manages to balance all the fun comic book elements with all the necessary character work to make this one of the better superhero origin stories.

While certainly carrying a few risks with the property, Marvel first step into their cinematic universe deserves great acclaim. RDJ is as charismatic as they come for the character, and is supported well by the likes of Bridges, Paltrow, and Howard. Favreau struck a good balance of pacing the jokes, keeping the story grounded and moving steadily, and keeping the upbeat feel that RDJ brings to the character of Iron Man, making this one of the best super hero origin story we've seen in awhile.

Shallow, boring, and uneven. Stark is a self-serving megalomaniac from start to finish without a hint of substantial development and the other characters only develop, unnaturally, to fit convenience - Potts suddenly becoming a ditz in the final act the most egregious example of this. Blah.

The absolute BEST comic translation I've ever seen. Downey, Jr. was the perfect actor to play the always-cool ladykiller, and Paltrow was adequate if not OK as Potts, with the rest of the cast also pulling a stellar job. The origin story is always a bit hard for non-readers to get, but I think they pulled it off just right. And the technology! Oh how glorious it all was. Stark lives in a technological dream, and I can't wait for the sequel (the snippet at the end was brilliant too!).

Jon Favreau has become a powerhouse director. He teams a great cast including Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane/Iron Monger (the bad guy) with Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Terrence Howard as Jim Rhodes - who eventually becomes War Machine (good guys), combines brilliant special effects with rich, witty dialogue to give us one of the what I would put in the bottom half of a "Top 10 Super Hero Movies" list.

So much wasted potential. It was another CGI-jerk off fest, with no real villain, rampant plot holes, the absolute minimum of logic. It pissed me off in the first 5 minutes when the activist decides to sleep with Tony Stark. Then, later in the movie, she is back in activist mode. Robert Downey, Jr. takes "Iron Man" and turns average Marvel comic fare on its head. Tony Stark is a real character full of sass, humor and style. Downey, in his mid-40s suits him perfectly, and quite possibly stands as the most audacious superhero casting by far. I don't get the praise for this movie. Right from the start I found it hard to connect with. Stark is a genius with a great wit and women all around him, who somehow parties all the time and makes billions of dollars in his spare time. First, that character is preposterous. If I have to summarize this film in one word it would be BULLOCKS. I mean, there is a fine line between fiction and absurdity. The A-Team-esque cave escape didn't earn this film much credit in the start, and I only got more skeptical the more I saw of it. It fails as science fiction and it's comedic aspects were just childish. Its only merit seems to be its graphical display of an utterly dispicable tale.

Iron Man contains some of the best character development in superhero films. Downey plays Stark so well that I sincerely believe no other actor could have pulled it off. The action is fantastic, and when Iron Man takes center stage, you feel his energy, his power, and his resolve. They're not empty CGI-fests, but are instead CGI-fests with a purpose and a point, with the characters we've grown to care about involved within them. Robert Downey Jr. is great in the lead role, and while the side characters don't get much development, they're played by good actors and do their jobs fine. It's definitely a film that I recommend going to see.

The opening movie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is ultimately one of the better movies in the franchise and one of the best super origin stories today. Robert Downey Jr. was obviously born to fit the role of Tony Stark and supporting cast is great too, especially Jeff Bridges. Favreau directs action and visual effects pretty well so everything looks great and it's without a doubt entertaining. Underrated today, but it's still a really good film and one of my personal favorites.

A strong start to the MCU. It has the wherewithal to start small and build up the action as it goes (even though the final action sequence is underwhelming). Strong characters throughout, and you really couldn't cast Stark any better than RDJ.

How do you make a comic book movie more adult without layering it in 15 levels of grimdark? Follow Iron Man's example.

A comic-book movie through and through - bright color palette, somewhat disjointed plot, practically no thematic resonance. That being said, it offers a faithful character study of Tony Stark, ultra-capitalist playboy turned benevolent tech-god, supported by a charming performance by RDJ, a great villainous turn by Jeff Bridges, some exciting action sequences (although these get less exciting the longer the film goes on) and some excellent pacing. Gives time to character development over action.

Iron Man is the first of the MCU Phase 1 films and it was a strong platform for the series to build on. Robert Downey Jr. is arguably one of the best cast superheroes of all time and carries the franchise tremendously with style, sophistication and perfectly timed comic relief. The supporting cast is strong with good performances from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges. The visuals and set pieces are thoroughly enjoyable and ultimately Iron Man doesn't take itself too seriously and is great fun.

Iron Man does a great job of playing it straight, relying on a zippy, clever screenplay, RDJ's charisma, and some slick action with great effects work to deliver pulpy comic book thrills without any of the grim psychological baggage of the Batman films or the whiny emoting of Tobey Maguire's Peter Parker. It even manages to deliver a relatively decent antiwar message without fumbling it. It doesn't aim super high, but it's a nice example of knowing your limits.

The first of the Iron Man movies may very well be the best in my opinion. It tells the origin story of the Iron Man suit. It also has a very recognizable bad guy that is played by a perfect Jeff Bridges. I don't usually think of Jeff Bridges as a bad guy but he really pulled out all the stops in this movie. I really ended up hating the guy by the end of the movie. I am one of those people who believe that Terrence Howard should have stayed on as Roadie. He is, as always, fantastic.

Although Iron Man follows a general superhero origin story to a T for the most part. However Robert Downey Jr.'s amazingly dynamic performance raises the bar for the superhero film in general. Not only does Iron Man stand as a graceful and entertaining start for the MCU. It also works completely on its own as an awesome action film for a Saturday night!
