I hate stories that revolve around "...it was destiny." Okay then why am I supposed to feel inspired or affected by what I just saw? (which is clearly the aim.) The uncaring hand of fate decided this random kid's story for him. Meanwhile the other 99.9% of the slumdogs are stuck in their shit hole , and they can't do a damn thing about it! It's their destiny! yaaaaay..?

A foreign film for those who hate subtitles, and I in no way intend that as praise. Basically, it's the hour-and-half-long crucifixion of its protagonist leading to a foregone conclusion, complete with poop jokes and visual romanticization of abject poverty set to pop songs.

A sensationally emotional homage to Indian culture and its reminiscences while also becoming a hypnotizing film all on its own. With a lethal combination of extraordinary and unbelievable narratives and some marvellously riveting moments (Especially when the final question hits), Slumdog Millionare succeeds in the content it sets off to deliver. Sure it may be stereotypical, sure it may be ungratefully contrived and at times frustrating, but it's one of the better and remarkable films of 2008.

I went into this hoping I would love it, but was very disappointed. Every character is cartoonishly either evil or angelic, and the happy ending just came off as forced in such an otherwise depressing story. The plot holes are unforgivably huge. I also love how professional critics are calling me "soulless" and "dead inside" just because I failed to smile at a contrived ending that solves nothing and sweeps the major social issues under the carpet.

A great "feel good" movie (at least for the protagonist). In paying visual homage to 2002's incredible "City of God," Director Danny Boyle manages the near impossible: An even balance of sharp dialogue, hopeless romanticism, humor, intense violence and haunting beauty. The chemistry of the actors on screen was perfect and the thunderous soundtrack constantly impressed. While not as brilliant as some recent best picture nominees, Slumdog was the best and most memorable film experience of 2008.

This movie shows viewers that anything is possible. Even if you've come from having nothing, you still have a chance of winning a million dollars. The more experience you have in life, the more knowledge you gain throughout. This movie was a great representation of that, and gives people hope that anything is possible. The concept of using the game show was a great idea, and the plot was set up very nicely.

Films starts very tightly - editing/cinematography are top notch, narrative is enthralling and unusual. I was thinking it has overall few tones brighter feel of "City of God". Sadly somewhere on the way it lost most of good story qualities, and became, what i was afraid it would be in the first place, very much like Bollywood-made melodrama. Plot became overriden with clichés and sappy dialogues, and the beauty of technical side served no other purpose but to emphasize faulty plot. Overrated.

More mainstream moral bankruptcy, attempting to spoonfeed to us the state of India while laying on another absurd twist every few minutes and giving us a hokey fairytale ending just to give us a shallow sense of relief, destroying all credibility within. The most offensive, stereotyping and audience exploitative movie since Paul Haggis's Crash. I hadn't felt so pissed off in a cinema for years. Dear Danny Boyle: You are so above this.

I really like how the story was told through each question showing a part of Jamal's life and how he knew the answer to every question despite not being educated. Jamal's and Latika's adventure through life from impoverished kids to young adults is fun to watch and a bit emotional at times.

Brilliantly directed, this is a great example of a story becoming so much better because of HOW its told. The structure here makes it intense and intriguing, funny and heartbreaking. Moments that would otherwise be sappy still work because you want them to work, and because of the framework. Add to this some good cinematography, fantastic soundtracking, and an authentic look at India that bridges the gap between the slums and the rich, and you have a really fantastic movie here.

Old-fashioned Hollywood fairytale Frank Capra-style gone new millinium and modern Bollywood - and what a mix!.. My heart couldn't stop pounding, my face couldn't stop smiling. Indie meets melodrama, cliches turns classic, in this beautifully shot, well-crafted, -acted and -structured charmer that also gains a lot form yet another magnificent score from the great A.R. Prepare for a cultural awakening. "Slumdog Millionaire" follows an intense story of two struggling Indian brothers looking for an escape from their ruthless Indian culture and, after much tension, left me with a new appreciation for underdogs. Along with this intense plot, the way this movie integrated the main character's story with the oh-so-popular "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" was also entertaining in a complete heart-wrenching way.

danny boyle is anything but predictable, urban decay drug movie, zombie movie, full out sci-fi, and of course the next step would be..."who wants to be a millionaire?" indian style. that said he is just as on top of the game as he's always been, the screen play here is utterly fantastic, and combined with great acting and ethnic, but accessible music, a riveting narrative, and a non-conformist (for these days) good ending, it simply blew my socks off.

Despite all the plaudits, this isn't the best movie of the year (that'd be The Wrestler). It isn't the best movie about quiz shows (that'd be Quiz Show). It isn't even the best movie with an out-of-nowhere-end-credits dance number (Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman). It is however well made and Danny Boyle's energetic direction gives the illusion of pace even as the mildly interesting story outstays it's welcome.

Most overrated film in recent memory? Well, since Crash, anyway. Dev Patel does a very fine job as the lead actor, but his performance couldn't save the movie from an unconvincing story, sudden character changes (rather than developments), and clichéd plot devices. Overly pandering.

What we've got here is failure to communicate. Once again Danny Boyle shows his inability to properly use the devices of cinema. Seemingly, he wants to show us the harsh realities of life in the streets of Mumbai, hence the handheld camerawork, yet he hands us an untruthful fairytale. So if you live in the slum of India, just wait for fate to help you out. It not only exudes fakeness, it is also painfully boring and predictable.

This movie is exactly like the beggar kids knocking on the windows of tourist cars: gorgeous dirt-stained faces, huge eyes, a beautiful singing voice, and missing one arm and one leg and crying about its suffering so that it will win double Oscar points from me. It worked! Cuz here I am forking over more points to this movie, but its liveliness & joy prevent me from feeling TOO manipulated.

2nd viewing: Went to see it again in theaters on a whim. Boy, am I glad I did - it was so much better than I remembered. I'm now finally convinced this was the film that deserved the Best Picture Oscar, it is an outstanding film and beyond any doubt the best picture of 2008. Even having seen it before the film brought tears to my eye towards the end, which frankly hasn't happened in years. Sure, the ending is cheesy, but I honestly don't care. What's wrong with cheesy, really?

A fine fairy tale feature, full of energy and charm all the way through. It is occasionally manipulative (Jamal really gets put through the wringer) and I wasn't all that impressed with the characterization, but overall still quite engaging with Boyle's trademark dynamic style that works well in the Indian slum setting and with good performances from all the young actors.

I never liked Indian movies because there seems to be nothing but Bollywood. It's just not my kinda film. Good cinematography, yes, but all in all it's just too lame and cheezy. But Boyle did something great here. This is one good film! The way the story is told is just awesome. I'd say it's a drama about hope and friendship with a little, but well workin touch of Bollywood.

Complete with stunning, almost surrealist cinematography, a solid core ensemble cast, a sweeping, epic, yet dramatic plot, a strange, almost ethnic-feeling soundtrack that flows violently but gracefully with the story, all mixed with bemusingly sharp direction, Slumdog Millionaire certainly has all the parts of a truly great film. What's troubling then, is that it seems to disappointingly ride the fence between uplifting and riveting - never really achieving the power that the material merits.

Ad like visuals and storytelling and a story which in the end becomes a redemptive narrative - a dangerous mistake. A sense of national allegory looms over (reminded me of Rushdie's Midnight's Children). The cast is generally good. Highly overrated, and the sickening part of giving this an Oscar, would be thinking that by giving it an award that you're somehow combating against suffering (deserves definitely a Razzie for the script - no character development whatsoever, modern Candide.)

This was so good! Boyle and his crew brought a great piece of cinematography to the screen. The actors are just the right kind to mediate the brutality of a mumbai slumdog's life on the one hand and the emotionality of Indian society on the other hand. And the screenplay is so inventive and so exciting...and it needed the cheezy end. Period! 14/01/09

After brief stops in sci-fi and zombie territory, Danny Boyle tackles Bollywood and proves that he can do anything. The back-and-forth chronology is tough to get into initially, but in the end, the narrative framing is what elevates the story above its straight-forward underdog trappings. I would never have guessed I would see an emotionally affecting, up-lifting film about 'Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?', but again: Danny Boyle can do anything. A great film, with equal doses of grit and glitz.

Far beyond paternalism, its racism invites the marginalization of an entire culture, relegating India to this feel-good pastiche delivered in a gaudy, candy-colored package promising the literal deus ex machina of Faith as the path to hot chicks and cold cash.

The movie is entertaining, but the structure of the story is weird. They present us a completely believable and realistic love story - a very tragic one, but unfortunately that's how life goes most of the time - and after all this, they give us a fairy tale ending. So, why do you mix up children's tale with harsh reality? It's not working well. It's also a shame, because otherwise the movie has excellent writing and I could value it much more if it didn't have a fundamental flaw in its main plot

Mesmerizing mixture of Indian culture with Western sensibilities that runs you through the proverbial ringer with emotions that range from sadness to elation. Despite the immense backlash for not being "hard" enough and being "unrealistic" (even though it *is* a fairy tale), this is debatably Danny Boyle's greatest film and one of the best films of 2008. This is a movie that will eliminate some of the strongest of cynics and inspire like few films in recent memory.

A gussied up fairy-tale, the film tells a basic story (purely good or purely evil characters and a simple 'will he save the princess' plot) by applying a unique structure and style to the film. However, the structure removes all suspense from the story, as its pretty clear from the opening moments what will result. On top of that, the style seems designed to manipulate audience emotion through a kind of "slum tourism," where music and flashy angles mitigate the disturbing social chaos of Mumbai.

A story this good would've been entertaining no matter what. It's about a kid in India who goes on their version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?," and does well. He is then questioned by the police as to why he, a "slumdog," made it so far on the show. It's with frantic editing and empathetic cinematography that the film gets its art through to the audience. Not only those two things, but brilliant writing, directing, and performances don't hurt it either.

While it is contrived and supposedly stereotypical I was able to find a lot of enjoyment in the film. The various actors playing the main leads were all very impressive and each definitely had their moment of brilliance. The directing is top notch as is the absolutely stunning cinematography and the editing is masterful. There is easily enough energy and heart in the film to make one overlook any cultural inaccuracy, something I can be no judge of, and remind you why you love movies.

Frustrating film is eminently watchable with some charming FORREST GUMP-ish elements about the nature of chance and destiny (even if you're a cynic who doesn't necessarily believe!). There would always have to have been a slightly clunky expositional element, but the gameshow sequences are simply absurd, and derail the sincerity of Jamal's story (though Kapoor is a hoot as the slimeball host). Well crafted as a director's piece, and the childhood sequences are genuinely warm and amusing.

Boyle's best film after Trainspotting, proving once more he knows his way around the camera. Of course the story felt contrived/clichéd (but since it's based on a book, you should just go with it), but that feeling diminishes as the final question draws near. A definite crowd-pleaser, that in this time of economic instability should put a smile on people's faces. Enjoy!

Basically, it's a pretty good film that sacrifices a chance at greatness for a chance at becoming a crowd pleaser. All sorts of interesting elements get brought up, developed and then pushed aside for the sake of the most acceptable story arc. Still it's very well directed and worth watching as Hollywood film with an unconventional setting.

With clever flashbacks, stylized action, realism and small doses of humour, "Slumdog Millionaire" for the most part is an entertaining film. Alas, the finale takes a big crap on what came before. The director suddenly seems completely uninterested in the oppression in this world after his hero wins 20,000,000 rupees. The happy-end sell-out gave "Slumdog Millionaire" its recognition and awards but degraded the film to a silly bubblegum.

What's all the fuss about? Stereotypes upon stereotypes and predictability around every corner. Every character from A to Z either completely evil or completely good. It's the fairytale ethical compass gone wild. And this in a drama aiming for characters, you feel for, and situations, you can at least to some degree imagine? Some nice shots though.

Yes, this is a good film. It is, however, also true that it's overrated and hypocritical and the storytelling technique gets stale about halfway through. Some may enjoy the frantic tempo of the photography and editing, but I personally found it distracting in what is essentially a lovestory. Good, but nowhere near excellent.

With great camerawork and editing it's definitely not an average film. The script contains uncomfortable scenes we'd never see in a Hollywood movie and deserves respect for that; however, there's no denying that the story and characters are somewhat too simplistic and the words 'destiny' and 'it is written' occur a bit too often. A pity, as it left me a bit unsatisfied, beliving it wasn't far from beaing a great and significant film.

It's not a feel good movie in my opinion but it does everything to be so. Drama mixed with a healthy dosage of luck. First, It was the harsh reality that a show which had a "just for fun" feel about it in the western world would be seen as a ticket for a new and probably better life in India where the gap between poverty and luxus has monstrous proportions, second how Jamals life reflected that reality which made the movie interesting and whorty of its time for me.

enlightened white boy danny boyle generously corrects our misconceptions about india with all the grit and nuance of a j-lo video. turns out those little indian slumsters are damn tough and honest or turn out that way in the end (daddy, i want one) - and whilst they may be in poverty, it's us greedy westerners, eyes and ears closed to the humbling power of destiny, who are in poverty of the soul. it exemplifies the very american paternalism it pretends to hate; it's smug, hypocritical trash.

Best.. This is the story of an Indian teen from the Mumbai slums,Jamal, and not how.. but why he ends up on a hit big monet TV show. To write even a semi-decent review for this would take pages so I'll keep it short. This film moved me unlike any I've ever seen, its an amazing accomplishment in every sense but what truly confounded me was... how the hell did a Gora director get the sub-continent so right?

Irresistible fairy tale where good and evil characters are clearly defined. It is almost like a children's movie but at a more violent level. There is little left to the imagination, as the poor slumdogs of the film endure every possible hardship that Indian society offers, from death squads to traffic jams. Perhaps this is Boyle's homage to Sanjit Ray as translated for the Guy Ritchie/Tarantino generation. I'd call it a minor modern masterpiece.

This movie had a lot to live up to after all the hype and build up it was given. Criticker had me giving it a freakin 96. It didn't fully succeed in living up to this, but it still was a solid film. I like the use of the MIA song on the train, and I think the story itself was solid. The beginning was tough because it was flipping between three different parts of the story, but you learn later that was needed, so it can do a better job setting the stage for the rest of the film.

Its brutal, edgey, funny and cheesy and somehow it integrates these diverse qualities into an enthralling story which however far fetched seems somehow plausible. The tough existance of a slum upbringing provides more vibrant memories than most will ever experience. The directing is fantastic with colourful imagery and slick sequences throughout. It has real cutting edge but ultimately it's an incredibly uplifting film.

Blistering opening half showcases Boyle's unmatched ability to meld striking visual images and kinetic music to dazzling effect. He creates a really vivid portrait of the city which serves the flashback structure of the plot well. For me it falls short of true greatness because of the duller more conventional second half when the plot focuses on the burgeoning romance which the adult actors struggle to convey effectively.

Enjoyable, but for me this movies first half is much stronger that its second. The excellent child actors and the structure of the storytelling seems to work much better in the first half, as things get a little messy later on. That said Boyle again shows he is a good director with plenty of visual flare. For whatever reason however I failed to really connect with the characters or the story to any great level. I enjoyed "Slumdog..." but I am not too likely to revisit it.

I imagine a lot of hayseeds out there were perplexed by the Bollywood-style ending, but then again they probably wouldn't have liked much of the rest of it, either. I also can imagine some people missing the point about destiny and objecting to all the coincidences in the film. I thought it was a genuinely engaging story, nicely structured and not overly clichéd. It does wallow in its own misery a little too much, and the editing occasionally gets a bit manic, but all in all I was impressed.

The filming in itself was refreshing in a world of shaky chase scenes and fake action... the plot, I'll admit, seemed odd from the beginning, but all in all I really enjoyed the turnout.

There hasn't been a social drama this decadently over-hyped since City of God. Boyle plays the same game of pandering to liberal sensibilities while entertaining safe, middle-class distance.

I blame the Oscars. You see, had this not been so hyped up, perhaps I'd look at it in the light of "Yeah, good film, shame nobody saw it, underrated, 7/10". Instead, I'm looking at it in the light of "Highly overrated, 7/10". It's a very sour 7 here, folks. I have no issues with the technical side of the film, bar maybe the annoying subtitles, and no issues with the acting. The plot is where I have issues. It's far too predictable and, try as it may, constantly fails to grab you.

I found it quite enjoyable with a good story that was nicely acted by a bunch of people I haven't seen before. There were some parts of the movie that the plausibility factor faltered, and though it did adversely affect the film, it didn't change what I got out of the film, a feel good story about an individual that had more life experiences that most of us will ever have.

I was already biased because of the trailer, but the movie on its own still wasn't able to convince me of its brilliance. ... The storytelling, and the combination between Bollywood and Hollywood make this worth your while. And although he uplifted the approach to such a contrived story Danny Boyle didn't get me convinced of all this happiness.

Heavy-handed, melo-dramatic, manipulative and disrespectful to its audience. Disgustingly in-earnest post-ending dance scene, so much so that I was originally almost certain that it was meant in a parody sense, and was'nt to be taken seriously. All in all, utter shit and one the most embarrassing Best Picture desicions to date.

Pretty decent movie, but it's not like it's the best thing to hit the earth since sliced bread or anything. The intertwining of the game and the flashbacks, was a different touch. It was interesting to note that the game in the movie was Americanized a bit to cater to the American audiences - most notedly, how they swapped out the 'lakh' and the 'crore' and brought in the 'million' (In reality, Indians, both in real life, and in the Indian version of the game, never use the term 'million').

There is a far richer story to be told about the slums of Mumbai. It is superficially addressed during the childhood storyline, but then the film descends into a shallow City of God. I profoundly didn't care, and yet it escapes me how the humanity is left undiscovered. The slums will likely be redeveloped; the opportunity to capture a unique culture lost.
