Kate Winslet gives the performance of the year in the most moving, beautiful film of the year. Forget what you heard about the film's inaccessibility or its lack of emotion; this film is the only film that has moved me close to tears in quite a long time, thanks to Daldry's direction, Hare's potent adaptation, and the performances of both Winslet and the surprisingly excellent Kross.

A hideously overcooked melodrama; so sappy you could pour it on your pancakes, so soapy you could bathe with it. If touching piano strings rose up during one more emotional conversation, my eyes would have explosively rolled out the back of my head. Kate Winslet is one of the towering talents of her generation, and bless her for her continued willingness to disrobe at a moment's notice, but even she can't save this mawkish groaner.

It's not bad but the ending and the last hour was some terrible shit that went nowhere. I liked the first hour a lot but I can't forgive that shitty ending. Ultimately the movie fails cause it asks you to have sympathy for someone who participated in exterminating jews. Nice concept, idiots. We have enough Holocaust movies that are way better and more informative then this And Winslet, we get it. You have saggy tits with huge nipples. Enough already! I don't want to see you naked anymore!!!

Winslet delivers a great performance, and the two actors playing Michael are decent. But this film, which has a pretty solid premise, goes through so many unnecessarily agonizing and torturous movements, depending on seemingly masochistic and withdrawn characters who make every decision appear so endlessly painful. Maybe I'm just bored with holocaust dramas, but there was solid potential here, especially in the first act and the beginning of the third, but too much melodrama ruined it.

Kate Winslet, as always, puts on a fabulous performance but the rest of the movie leaves a lot to be desired. With an extra third of the movie tacked on there could have been a lot to be explored as what we have now, clearly stripped of depth, is rather unfulfilling. The sexual intensity the movie brings is really excellent, but once that's over we are given scene after scene that advance neither the relationship of the characters or the story, really. The Reader is Oscar bait at best.

Kate Winslet is fine here, but didn't deserve the Oscar for this one - and I'm a big fan of her. And the movie is just ordinary, commom piece of moral drama with war background. The result is something distant, boring and mediocre. David Kross and Winslet might be the only highlights in this one.

Yes, Kate Winslet can act, but this movie is completely offensive. WHY is it all spoken in English but set in Germany? A calculated, cold adaptation of an otherwise good book which obviously got the desired Oscar gold. Yuk.

From time to time, I see something that reminds me that cinema is not all about entertainment. While the goal of almost every major film is to induce bigger-then-life feelings on the viewer, this is a nutrient for thought instead. It shows you some difficult situations without attempting to judge characters, or pretending there's a solution. In stead, it says: here's a good story: think of it what you want.

Alright on the surface but where there should be depth there is lazy storytelling techniques, many so blatantly (and unfortunately successfully) Oscar-baiting that it is painful to watch. It's a somewhat meaningless story which could only work if the film doesn't act more important than it is, a pitfall The Reader walks into so purposefully that it seems intended. Average at best, this is the film you might turn off halfway through because you can't be bothered, only it pretends to be more.

Kate Winslet and the rest of the cast have fervent and very ardent performances all around. The rest of the film however is a Oscar-hungry, puerile and obstinately melodramatic holocaust movie that would look a lot better bathed in excrement. Thank god Winslet reveals herself most of the time or else this would be fruitless in every way possible. Other than that, your same uniform award-winning drama that will "blow you away" (supposedly).

Features some really great elements, but I don't think it's a "great" film. It's a gorgeous movie, Winslet is great (even though it's not her best performance), David Kross is surprisingly good, Daldry's direction is solid, and the supporting cast is quite nice, but overall the film suffers from some pacing problems and it felt a bit emotionally cold to me. I was reminded a lot of the English Patient, only The Reader isn't quite as epic or effective.

As low as I can rate a movie that's this well-acted, but it's ultimately an empty viewing experience. The movie opens numerous story possibilities for itself along the way, but goes nowhere with most of them. Winslet is tremendous (and very naked), and Kross is surprisingly strong as well, but...ugh. It's just flagrant Oscar bait that serves no real purpose. Countless films were robbed of proper recognition because of the nominations this received. Congrats Harvey. Winslet's Extras ep came true.

The first hour was somewhat uninteresting, and the amount of nakedness made the film laughable. Despite that, I was deeply emotionally invested in the second part. Winslet just spent a third of the film baring her breasts and apparently that's enough to win the best leading actress Oscar nowadays. This is not to speak ill of Kate Winslet's breasts, but if this qualifies as great acting, I'd hate to see what would happen if the Academy ever discovered the cultural phenomenon known as "pornography".

Daldry,Winslet&Fiennes pull off quite a feat in fomenting sympathy 4 the truly unsympathetic. Questions like do truly evil acts make 1 "evil" & should the punished evildoer be denied any acts of kindness for the rest of their lives? r only easy 2 answer when speaking generally; as soon as they involve some1 u know, it's much harder 2 say.Asking the audience 2 reconsider an evildoer will understandably turn some viewers off. But 4 those who can, the film provides plenty 2 think about.

Naive and glib. I'm offput by how a tale about Nazi war guilt is played in terms of an incredibly middlebrow sentimental erotic fantasy. Treating this subject in such a shallow manner...yuck. Then there's the overbearing musical score, the unneccesary and initially even undesirably confusing jumping back and forth through time and the problems I always have with the accents in these films (if you're not going to make the film in German then don't draw attention to it not being in German!).

One of those rare romantic movies I really appreciate. Being kind of a literature freak myself, I was utmost charmed by this pure and sensual love story. Perhaps certain people didn't understand what this meant to both people and especially to the woman inpersonated by Kate, but I was sweapt away by the first reading and my attention didn't even fade once since that moment until the very end. Great storytelling and a rich story in the midst of one of the most tumultuous times we've known.

the story is very subtle, yet immensely powerful and absolutely captivating. winslet's performance will be remembered in the years to come. the imagery of the eras are skillfully portrayed, and the feeling of quasi-despair of the post war years are dead on. it leads to some serious contemplation about the nature of good and evil, morality, obsessions and relations between men and women.

I found this movie to be slightly better than average. Not particularly memorable, and sure as shit not Oscar worthy. There's really not much to say. It's pretty straight forward. The only interesting thing thematically going on here is the attempt to humanize SS soldiers, but that attempt pretty much crosses from sub-text to actual text. Not very clever. I could recommend the film for the performances I suppose, but the story isn't anything to get excited about.

A solid piece of filmmaking, but feels like a shined up Hallmark movie. Stephen Daldry directs and brings a lot of (and some overdone) sexuality to launch a relationship between a younger teenager and his older seductress that ends abruptly and haunts him forever. The film is powerful, no doubt, a strong film about the singular observations of the characters. Sadly, the relationship feels like it's missing a certain strength in the second half, maybe because Winslet remains too mysterious.

The projector was broken or something so this usually full-colour film was desaturated almost to the point of black and white. To be honest, I actually think it enhanced the film. It's not as romanticised and comes off as less sappy Oscar bait. Other than that the cast were great, Winslet especially being amazing and totally deserving that Oscar, and it was only towards the end where it turned into ridiculous schmaltz that I stopped enjoying it. The wrong colours probably bumped it up a LOT tbh

Phenomenal. As good as the book. Literary and superb. A disturbing connection between a much older woman and a very young teenager (13-15, I don't know, young enough that if the genders were reversed it would be pedophilia). Deals with important issues of guilt and forgiveness of the Nazi legacy in germany, the loss of youth, and the power of literature.

The score, while not necessarily memorable, is I think the best way to describe the mood this film took, which is melodrama. The thing about it, though, is that it works pretty well. I knew nothing of The Reader going in, but having loved The Hours I was anticipating it. Daldry's presence here, unfortunately, seems a little non-existent. I enjoyed it for what it was, but I wasn't very emotionally invested. Maybe that's a criticism, maybe not. I don't know. All I can tell you is it's just good.

I knew virtually nothing about this movie going in, save that it's a Stephen Daldry film. That's probably the most desirable state to have when seeing this. Suffice it to say that it is one WEIRD love story; it's the kind of thing you could easily see not working, but it mostly does. Also kind of interesting in that it was just released, yet two of the producers are already dead. It helps a lot if you're a guy and had a really hot affair with an older woman when you were young

Correctly outed & by some punished for being Oscar bait; to be fair it's rarely something that ever bothers me in a movie. "The Reader" is undoubtedly a very good all-rounder. If this film has a weakness it's David Kross, who doesn't have the presence or skill to punch his weight with the excellent Winslet. In the end the movie swamps him, & it's not until Fiennes takes over the lead some kind of equilibrium is restored. In short; melodramatic, but engaging, with two or three brilliant scenes.

'The Reader' is watchable Oscar-bait which you shouldn't go out of your way to watch. What you should seek out, however, if you haven't already seen it that is, is Hugh Jackman's opening at the 2009 Academy Awards. "'The Reader'. 'The Reader'.
