Great dancing, pretty good music and interesting portrayal of the audition process more than compensate for the absence of plot and the fact that some of the acting is only fair (to be expected, given that the cast was obviously selected for dance ability first of all). A great opening. Some directorial decisions were poor, probably due to an ill-considered attempt to compensate for what was considered un-cinematic about the theatrical production. On the stage show, cf., EVERY LITTLE STEP.

Wonderful choreography, but just about every decision that makes it unique from the musical was a misstep. Still worth a watch for the dancing! Prepare for some rough audio editing, too.

A classic play has been reduced a decent movie. It's a shame it couldn't be as good as the play; it's a small pleasure that it's as entertaining as it is.

I've heard the stage production was minimal & intimate: presumably that's what made this work. It must've felt original to "directly" hear from dancers & gays back in 1975, but the inner lives here must've seemed banal by 1985. There's also no personal conflict between characters (the director's "romance" always feels like a tangent). Song-wise, only the finale's memorable & the lyrics are lame. (The song about 1st time sex has a chorus about what a "Surprise" it was to feel these feelings.)

Movie was not that good, but if I remember right it contains good dancing scenes.

There sure are some fucking stupid ideas for 'movies' and this is certainly one.

Deeply accurate and brilliantly engaging. A real glimpse into the world of the theatrical hopefuls. Well shot, loads of snappy numbers and choreography, good script and characterisations

It's not horrible, but this is definitely not my kind of movie. What do I care about a bunch of wannabe Rockettes trying out for a Broadway show? I don't.

Very boring as far as I remember, long time since I seen the film and probably need to see it again to give an accurate score.

dancing was good, acting wasn't so hot.

This adaptation makes it hard to guess why the show would be a hit or how come those songs are not gratuitous. So, there's very good choreography; and that's the only singular sensation here.

Not the greatest stage show to begin with, it really doesn't translate well to film. Much of the music is quite good, and the dancing is spectacular, but bad acting, a horrible script, and static direction keep this film from ever really being more than a doldrum interspersed with the occasional energetic dance number.

There is so much talent on this film that is misused. The dancing is phenomenal, and considering it's original and not trying to replicate Bennett's iconic staging, that is saying something. All the rearranged songs were just poor versions of the stage, which is one of the best scores ever composed. They tried so hard to make it cinematic, adding in these awkward transitions of life outside the theatre in the beginning. It's decent, but ultimately it really shouldn't have been made.

So Sir Attenborough was probably not the best choice of director for a film that is based off of a broadway show is this aggressively American. Wonderful stage play, so so film experience.
