Angelopoulos' meditation on the meaning of one man's life is genuinely hypnotic in its way of transcending ordinary narrative.

It might be unfair to call this My Big Fat Greek Wild Strawberries, but that certainly was the first thing that came to mind. If the overall theme isn't especially original, the film does have some nice touches. The way Angelopoulos blends past and present, fantasy and reality, is appealing. The interactions with the boy provide an interesting framework for the narrative, and overall the story is moving. Tries a little too hard sometimes to be profound, and the pacing gets burdensome at times.

An impressive feature that I admire far more than I like. This film sure does work visually and some of the quieter moments are the best, but the dialogue is poetic, yet impenetrable and pretentious, which seems to sacrifice any message this film is trying to communicate in an attempt to be artistic. Maybe me 2 dum

Pushed my attention span to its limits, and I could have done with a little less literature, but this is powerful filmmaking.

(Viewed on 17/05/11): An old dying man looks for solace in his last days while contemplating a life of regret. It's Theo's Wild Strawberries with a contrived political subtext. It's probably his most direct and simple film, and the poetic voiceovers and lovely score occasionally pile on the sentiment a little too thickly. Ganz is OK, but the part was meant for Mastroianni who would have been preferable. There are some wonderful sequence shots though, and the bus ride is beautiful cinema.

Less beautiful, slightly more pretentious and self-important. The camera is pretty amazing though.

Basically a slower paced Wild Strawberries. I think I was in the right mood to appreciate this. The poetic stuff fitted well with the themes and there was a nice artistic touch to the whole thing with good music and cinematography. Bruno Ganz and that kid had some nice scenes together, and the slowness didn't bother me as much here as many artsy films do. Perhaps it meandered a bit here and there and some scenes could have been taken out or shortened. Despite that, it still worked.

Angelopoulos knows very well how to mix memories and reality. Some of the long takes, f.e. the marriage scene, are fantastic.

Rudely boring with all these great camera shots and slow calm camera movement followed by a dull scene of no substance or real emotion (even though it tries). And it's long, it's so annoyingly long for a film with so little to say, watch Wild Strawberries instead.

it was peaceful, beautiful, sad but in a good way. The language was so romantic, I enjoyed every single moment when someone was talking specially Anna. dialogs were beautiful. And of course the theme music was a masterpiece. and my favorite : - how long will tomorrow last ? - eternity and a day. "... but for those who love, time is eternity."

a meditation on the life of a man about to die, told in two stories, one in the present and the other in the past. there are times when its fancies feel a bit intrusive, particularly with the artsy theme tune.
