Over-the-top, occasionally hilariously melodramatic or just plain hilarious, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe is always fun to watch. The acting, given the genre, is par for the course. The story delves into the mythos of the creature and his opponents, but it never plods. The monster action is great with some fantastic miniature work. Gamera taking on his rivaled Gyaos should not be missed. Oh, and the musical score is pretty fantastic.

Entertaining reimagining of the classic kaiju with absolutely fantastic suitmation and miniaturework (very impressive achievement for the budget). Story has a solid structure & pace and the human characters aren't entirely annoying and pointless as is often the case with this genre of movies. Some of the details in the writing are a bit sketchy and the CGI & composite effects are often distracting but overall it has a bold bombastic tokusatsu flair that holds everything together rather nicely.

A really good modernization of one of the coolest Kaiju ever! Even though the same old terrible English dubbing and B-movie plot points are there to keep the laughs going, Gamera is portrayed in a visibly more serious light. Very fun, very enjoyable and a great final clash between Gamera and Gyaos!

A pretty well-composed by-the-book kaiju movie. "Sir, need I remind you that Gyaos is hunting and eating human beings!"

Most kaiju movies have pacing issues, but this one is solid throughout. Some of the humans are a little overly dumb but whatever everything is rad.

Even though I quite enjoyed the 2014 Godzilla, I would love to see a version of that movie, with the amazing special effects, paced the way this movie is paced. Because this is so much fun to watch, but the effects, especially the puppetry, aren't charmingly bad, they're just terrible, and don't fit the tone of the rest of the movie. It doesn't feel like Z-grade crap, but whenever Gyaos is on screen it definitely looks like it.

I, like most people, generally watch kaiju movies because of the campy silly fun. They are usually not movies to be taken seriously. The Gamera trilogy beginning with this film is an exception. They are genuinely good movies -- also campy silly kaiju fun -- but genuinely good movies too.

Thought this was a genuinely enjoyable film. The human elements were interesting and I definitely cared for the characters in the film. I like that there was a definite connection between the kaiju and the humans.

My favourite flying turtle is back and this time he kicks serious butt! Still a guy in a suit, though with a few Computer enhancements. This time he fights Gyaos, who's decided to make a nest in the Tokyo tower, though the military of course think Gamera's the problem, not the solution. Lotsa fun Toe knee :-)

When even a snobby critic like Ebert gives something like this 3 out of 4 stars, it's probably going to be good! And so it is, although it isn't the pinnacle of Kaiju movies as the community made this trilogy out to be (I haven't watched the other two yet). Gyaos isn't very interesting (should have just been "Gamera vs Rodan", but Gamera himself is great. The shot of him illuminated by flares at the foot of Mount Fuji lingers in my mind.

Amazingly enough the new entries in both the Godzilla and Gamera series are top notch features which give the audience what they want everytime and this flix's no different. If you've enjoyed Godzilla be sure to check out this series.

Decent enough for a monster movie, but it dragged quite a bit. Inferior to most Godzilla films.

A fun Monster film. Sequels are better. Human Story is surpsingly involved for this type of movie. Good use of effects, but the design for Gamera is a bit silly looking, and Gyaos is very obviously a hand-puppet in many scenes. Sequels are superior.
