Not so much a movie about filmmaking as it is about being a pathetic piece of shit, and on that front I dig it a lot. The film works because although Lawrence is really unlikable his gripes are tangible and play into his insufferable characterization. The criticism baffles me because the narrative never wants us to think he's likable but understand that being humbled by reality and becoming self-aware of ourselves is a lot more poignant of a coming of age story than bland validation.

If you like movies, then it's hard not to like I Like Movies. It's unashmedly about the nerdy love of movies, and it's also unashamedly about a real prick of a main character who's clearly a pain for everyone in his life, but the film clearly recognises this and gives him enough of a redemption to justify his shittiness. This film has a clear memory of being a 17 year old and how some of us can act so childish and selfish, and that there’s got to be a time to grow out of it.

Lawrence is the type of movie fan I strive not to be. He loves movies (good), but is obnoxious and pretentious, looking down on others. This makes it really hard to like him, especially since he's a dick to his only friend. He does redeem himself but it's hard to care. With that said, I like the people around him. And I thought that the movie was relatively clever. Funny at the beginning (it kind of loses that as it goes). I like the subject matter so it gets points for that too.

Shoutout to my guy Isaiah for portraying one of the most annoying people I’ve ever seen on screen. There’s actually no one that annoying, even the most socially stunted film bros aren’t this psychotic. Second movie in a week that had that cancon classic Tinfoil in it.

As someone who hates movies, but loves film, this was hard for me to relate. Okay okay, I do think it is easy to relate to this film, mostly because I was an obsessive weirdo as a teen. Luckily, I am cured of that now, as I write pretending to be Roger Ebert. In conclusion, I am glad this film didn't take the easy way out. It presented its awkward protagonist realistically and not as the cool rebel. You simultaneously find him annoying, yet sympathetic, which is a difficult balance.

I think to some degree, every kid that makes film their whole identity IS Lawrence, so, this does connect, even though at his worst, he's an unbearable, cartoony sociopath. This also gave me crazy "BlockBuster employee" flashbacks. I love how this feels, I'm apparently such a sucker for that early-2000s movie that it feels like I could make. Chandler Levack does a pretty faithful job of building this tiny Burlington BlockBuster universe, and by the end, it comes together as a worthwhile watch.

Captures the suburban ennui of Canada very well hit very close to home I mean they even go to the colossus theatre in Vaughn (the big spaceship theatre) which is in the same chain as the one I’ve seen hundreds of movies in in BC. I don’t think the heights of emotion they’re going for really work but like all these movies directors/writers want one thing and I want more hang out movies. Shout out Isiah

For a Canadian film...I Like Movies does a decent job of creating suburban high school drama out of flawed, often irritating characters. While the film doesn't say anything new nor showcase any novel perspectives, it captures a sense of mundane bleakness in both plot and style. Lehtinen does a good job as the frustrating lead but it's D'Ugo who steals the spotlight. More drama than comedy; more awkward than cringeworthy; the film succeeds at portraying relationships more than anything else.

Nice little film with a particularly good portrayal of showing flawed humans you still root for, by the end anyways. I will complain however about movies being set 20/30 years in the past but making little to no effort to look like it. Everything looks too polished despite the 4:3 ratio here not to mention they kept using cutaway shots with clearly modern cars showing.
