With a sigh it enfolds and soothes life. And that's truly jazz in its rhythms - yearning, breathing, knowing.

It's flawed, and I think much better viewed as a mood piece than a story, but still may be the best Jazz movie out there; it has real jazz giants playing the real stuff, Dexter Gordon reveals himself to be a capable actor, cameos, and Tavernier's sense of realism combined with a genuine interest in what life is like for aging Jazz musicians.

I'm no jazz hound, but the film was very atmospheric, and Gordon - who was nominated for at Oscar for the role - gives a good performance.

Jazz music can be lovely at times. If it's done right, it can give me goosebumps. I already knew the music in this movie, but I didn't like all the songs. Pretentious jazz I'd like to call it. The movie isn't that amazing, unless you're a big jazz fan. Never liked 'Dale Turner' personality. And is it me, or does François Cluzet look exactly like Dustin Hoffman?

Fine auteur qualities, but on the whole you're better off buying the soundtrack.

This isn't a standard music biopic that replays the Greatest Hits of songs and life stories of a known performer. Instead, it creates an original character influenced by real life jazz greats & puts him into a compelling dramatic film. Tavernier (like some foreign filmmakers doing English language films) stumbles by not getting the most out of dialogue. And I think the middle section could've been much darker. But those are minor complaints as Dexter Gordon nails the performance. Recommended.

An appreciation of the jazz legends of the past, and thus the soundtrack gets top ranking. However, the story -- a mostly-washed up musician followed by a stalker-turned-agent/babysitter -- was a little too free-form for me. Rather than get weighed down with plot, this just lets a smoky melancholy wash over the film.

A marvelous, smooth jazz movie filled with incredible performances. It has an atmosphere, a constant eargasm. I have a soft spot for stories about self-destructing geniuses and their only friend who deeply cares and tries to help, many times harming themselves in the process; and this delivered. Dale and Francis are fantastic characters, I loved the way their friendship was explored, got a bit teary eyed at the end :,)
