Hepburn and Lean lift this from mediocrity into something almost special. Hepburn's performance is superb, telling us as much about her character in reactions as in words, and Lean captures the beauty, and the failings, of Venice with a sharp eye. The story itself, however, is rather conventional and occasionally frustrating, and none of the supporting cast is memorable at all.

Way below par for David Lean. Katharine Hepburn seems to be all teeth and no face in this one

Hepburn has never been lovelier or more vulnerable.

So much of this is so good--the dark mark being the entirety of the local romance. I love the way Lean uses Venice, yes as a travelogue, but more importantly as a counterpoint to Miss Hudson's deep loneliness. Lean derives such rich feeling from these moments, and I can't think of many films that have quite the sense of place that this one does.

Watch out for the canal!!! Hepburn is one cool cat, much more so than her younger namesake.

Excellent performance from Hepburn as a lonely traveler in a foreign country - and an interesting cast of other characters. Brazilian as the love interest isn’t quite convincing-but that matches in with the ending.

Resumindo: Odeio Brief Encounter e amo Summertime. Coleção Folha/Versátil Grandes Astros do Cinema.

A conventional romantic getaway romp encumbered by a nagging feeling of fatigue and melancholia. The film pits American romantic idealism--in the form of a particularly droll Katherine Hepburn--against European romantic realism in a unique twist on classic love story formula. It sets the movie apart from so many other generic romantic dramas, but it does it so subtly that you may never notice. It may pass most viewers by as a more depressing take on giddy Hollywood romance, but it has its nuan

This charming movie is anchored by a tremendous performance by Kate and is quite delightful for most of it's running time. It's beautiful and most certainly has drawn more tourists to Venice than Don't Look Now. But it's more interesting as study of loneliness in it's first half then the by-numbers romance of the second half. Pleasant, not great.

David Lean's second worst film. It's just not particularly engaging or interesting in any way. It looks really pretty though, beautiful technicolor. The acting is also a bit sub-par. Disappointing.

Katharine Hepburn is fantastic as a lonely woman who reluctantly begins an affair, only to find it's not what she expected. Unfortunately Rossano Brazzi's performance doesn't live up to Hepburn's standards, but it is a wonderful film anyway. Despondency pervades the romance though it is somewhat fleeting, and even so this is a delightful watch. There are many little moments of illicit subversion, and the Technicolor is gorgeous. The film is truly a showcase for Venice; I just ate up the scenery.

Delightful, sympathetic travelogue with dramatic asides, great to look at and hinging on a single superb performance.

An mature, melancholy take on a familiar plot - old girl loosens up and lets go on a Mediterranean holiday. Hepburn is surprisingly raw in her ravishing dresses and smart pumps. But what a packer to get all that stuff into three little suitcases!
