Neither as good nor as bad as it could have been. It seems content to hit all the expected narrative beats with precious few surprises along the way, leaving us with a decent show that's fun and nostalgic but frustratingly safe.

This series should not work. It's a very tricky balance to capture the hokiness of the original while still making something "mature" now, but this almost always pulls it off. It's a smart move to make Johnny the central protagonist bc the push-pull of his jerkiness w/ his aspirations is hilarious. The 1st season is perfection, the 2nd gets wobbly but the third mostly rights the ship, bringing back old characters in organic ways & - more balance! making those reappearances both fun & bittersweet

I haven't loved a new TV series as much as this one in years. This could be my Karate Kid nostalgia talking, but at the same time Karate Kid nostalgia doesn't make me pretend KK3 is any good so maybe not. This show does such a good job expanding and deepening the character of Johnny Lawrence, and manages to balance and respect both its old and new generation of characters so well. Awesome fight scenes and teen melodrama alike. The BEST retro revival of any movie or show to date, period.

I actually purchased a Red subscription to see this. Nostalgia drove me, but I ended up being caught up in the fascinating approach of showing both sides of the story. It's refreshing approach of not making things black and white, the "good guys" do bad things and the "bad guys" do good things. It's areas of grey are the highlight. The only real flaw I found was some of the acting was a little off, but that happens in shows with younger actors.

I saw this because of the hype and my own curiosity I haven't seen all of it But so far I'm impressed I like that they bought back some of the original actors and blend in parts of the first movie I'm looking forward to more episodes

After watching the first three seasons. The show is on a downward trajectory but we'll see how Season 4 goes.

It takes the skeleton of the films and elevates it with more interesting character dynamics and cool use of music and editing. The dynamic between Miguel and Johnny, especially in relation to Robbie, is a high point. However, by season 3 I was getting tired of the series trying to give everyone some shitty character arc and the way they handled established arcs was super lame, even worse with how Kreese became the central villain. May change the rating once season 4 comes out, likely lower.

Mildly cheesy, but massively entertaining, plays its nostalgia well, doesn’t take itself too seriously, and gives so much needed development to Johnny Lawrence. The first episode or two are a tad weak, but for the most part it gets better each episode (although some seasons are better than others). Probably the most entertained I’ve been by a series since S1 of Stranger Things.

I was never a huge fan of Karate Kid, even though it's a classic. But. This series. It's like a well-though-out fanfic by a loving fan of the original movie. Prepare to feel deep satisfaction in many scenes where they play out the script JUST as you'd fantasize. I love how they handled Zabka's character. He isn't an unfeeling monster. He's simply a pretty self-aware asshole who's done shitty choices in life, but doesn't moan his bad luck since it's pretty much comeuppance to him

Hugely bingeable and anchored by a fantastic Zabka as Johnny Lawrence who is now one of my favorite TV characters of all time.

One of the most watchable shows ever. Cheesy, fun and entertaining. Johnny Lawrence is one of the best TV characters and Silver is a great villain. Season ranking: 4 > 5 > 1 > 3 > 2.

Fun to watch, period. Every character is basically a braindead criminal, with a problem with rage control. Every single person would deserve jail if this were the real world. But this is Karate Kid world: a fight is perfect in every situation. Don't expect any character to do the right thing at the right time: it will never happen. Bullied teens become bullies and so on. Almost every adult is an idiot. In the end, this is the best way to say "if you use violence, you are stupid.". Well done.

Really excellent, especially when compared to most revivals of nostalgic franchises, or to most modern TV, actually.

(Seasons 1-3). SLOILER ALERT: Misguided nostalgia, but in some respects superior to even the original film. Johnny is a surprisingly compelling character, and the new recruits are generally fine. It is unfortunate then that it takes a rather sharp and silly left turn in S3 by transforming Kreese into a Sith Lord type figure. However, it is comforting to know that Macchio's 'acting' is still as mediocre as ever, and it works better than one would expect. Overall, nerdy fan fiction done right.

That first season -thanks in large part to Zabka - really hit the sweet spot between homage and parody. Sadly from then it became exactly what it was making fun of.

ALLI. remember S2 worse. S3 mostly 75/+. S4 70 bit then 75. s5 75 some -.

This show knows what it is soooo well, and delivers on that promise greatly. So much fun and silliness it is amazing. And my guess is that Barnet Stinson is the creator :)

S1: 87 S2: 84 Absolute fun, nice nostalgia flashbacks and self-aware of how silly it actually is. It was the only way to make a sequel series over 30 years later that worked so well. S3: 78 It's already beginning to crumble here, as Johnny & Daniel are pushed too far into the background, still very entertaining nonetheless. S4: 65 You immediately notice the impact of Netflix and its typical topics. Starts very weak but then has a few nice episodes. S5: 52 Pretty crap, guilty pleasure material!

Starting from a theme that seems potentially interesting - the equally important roles of aggressiveness and nonaggression in social life, but the series ends up becoming sluggish with the personalities of characters way too rigidified and the same conflicts proliferating endlessly to keep the story going on.

extra cheesy-- don't watch this seriously, but it's fun in a "goofy high school drama with karate fights where the parents join in" way
