John Mulaney: New in Town

I had a stupid grin on my face the whole time. But then I decided to take off my Joker mask and continue watching, because my constant giggles sounded weird when muffled.

Mulaney is charming and clean-cut without being a choir boy, and a great storyteller.

Funny story driven stand-up.

One of the best story centric stand up acts around. It's like drinking beers with your funny friend that has tons of stories that never get old.

Mulaney is probably a lot of fun at parties.

John Mulaney comes out of nowhere to deliver the best stand-up special in years.

One of my favourite stand up set. Although it doesn't quite hit the highs of Mulaney's first special, this is an incredibly solid, and often hilarious, hour of material.

Adorable.

This is probably my third favorite of his specials but still includes some timeless bits, especially the titular joke.

Mulaney has a unique voice in comedy. That's a great compliment.

John Mulaney looks like a young Jason Bateman, but more narrow. I have worn out most of my enjoyment of this special, but I liked it very much the first time.

Considering how bad his sitcom is said to be, it was enormously surprising just how funny this was, more than living up to the promise hinted at by his outrageously funny George St Geegland character.

I am tough customer when it comes to stand-up. Picked this one based on the runtime (1hr.) and high PSI. The first half an hour was slow. Mulaney looks like a super-white clean-cut dorky ventriloquist's dummy. In the second half his jokes gets good, and his delivery superb. The time flies by and I feel disappointed this only lasted an hour.

With alt-comedy's edgy luminaries seeming as time passes more and more like simply angry white men, it's reassuring that someone a little friendlier, a little cleaner, a little more traditional, can still reduce me to tears of laughter. Despite the notorious failure of his sitcom I still love Mulaney to bits and eagerly await whatever his next project might be. (I hope it's more standup.)

This is Mulaney at his quintessential and the special that likely propelled him to stardom. He plays the "nerdy" everyman character well and has a great, meandering way of telling a story that creates a unique sense of comedy.

This feels like 1980s stand up. There were a couple of good laughs, but it was mostly weak.

Pretty solid set, if a little tame for my taste. Jim Jefferies has a much better ass-related anecdote, for instance.
