Louis Theroux: Extreme Love - Dementia

Effective presentation of the effects of the disease on sufferers and their families.

That situation with the dentist guy was pretty fucked up.

Problem one of the saddest documentaries you will ever watch in your entire life. Both my grandmothers died of dementia so this really hit home. It's a horrible, horrible disease as people try to life with effectively only small fragments of their life in their conciousness. Sometimes even less than that. When one son's grandmother recognizes him for a second and he almost cries you can bet your bottom dollar I did.

If you have any experience of Alzheimer's you'll be familiar with what's covered here, but even so, this manages to be one of the more enjoyable Theroux experiences by perfectly balancing the sadness of the subject with many genuinely heartwarming and humorous moments. The sufferers are all good eggs, and their ability to laugh at themselves endears you to them further. Some stories, such as the young mother who's told she won't recognise her own family within two years, bring the horror home.
