THE MY WIFE IS DEAD SPECIAL

A pretty personal set from Oswalt that has a large section devoted to his deceased wife and the aftermath with his daughter. Despite the grim subject matter he manages to stay sadly sweet, or sweetly sad and it's a pretty rewarding experience.

Why do you want to watch this? To laugh? I didn't laugh much. I think a couple of gags did the trick but mostly I was aware I wasn't enjoying the material as much as the audience. I like Patton. He definitely can make me laugh, but this one doesn't. Do you want to watch him use a routine to help him overcome the death of his wife? It's intriguing for sure. It's definitely worth watching if that's your angle as he seems pretty honest in what he shares.

Had I not seen an interview or two he made this would've caught me entirely by surprise but either way it still holds up as a fantastic special

When I watch Patton Oswalt stand-up all I want is to hear him beep and boop like a robot, but I guess he has to talk about that time his wife died so I'll have to wait for the next special.

Enjoyable, (mostly) light-hearted set is really too lightweight to support some of Oswalt’s more melancholic digressions, but Oswalt makes for an endearing and fun presence, with the first half’s “Trump panic” material dating it firmly to the 2016-17 era. The spirit of this is certainly admirable, but the results are fairly tepid.

There's something beautiful about Patton's willingness to share his story in a way that's both genuine and still comedic. I honestly felt guilty laughing at some of his jokes until I realized, this is his coping mechanism as much as his craft, and he wants there to be laughter as much as consideration. I'm glad he's found peace and love again, but at the time, this was the real sign he was recovering.

I can't imagine the difficulty it would be to create a new set that discusses your wife's passing. Oswalt does a great balancing act of being both serious and funny.

Very heartfelt, not too often a stand up comedy set can get you teary eyed
