A significant series that captures the essence of noir cinema, which could have secured a permanent place in the annals of memory with a more cohesive conclusion.

Farrell's Sugar is up there with my favorite hardboiled investigators in movie history so while I really wish they had kept things simple towards the end of the first season, this is nevertheless a pretty huge recommendation for anybody who is into film noirs and detective fiction.

The neo noir is fantastic. Really really good. The twist, does kinda erode that "dated" feeling, but it gets back to it somewhat. Sugar is likeable and charming and competent in most things, so its fun to watch him perform, and with a really nice cast. I am very curious to see the second season, if it can recapture that feel.

Even if Farrell stood in a corner for eight episodes, I would give him an Emmy. This was more than that: brilliant editing, acting, cinematography, but did it really need to do that thing that it did? Seemed kind of unnecessary.

Endearing and ever so good looking Colin Farrell throws it a lifeline but it's not enough. Confusing, flashy editing that serves no narrative purpose is my main gripe. But i can also raise some annoyances about the voice over, that lazily narrates thoughts and events unnecessarily. Very striking is how Ep.1 was in a total noire style: sweeping vintage music, chill atmosphere, all the vibes. And then after Ep.1 they seemed to have.. forgotten they were.. doing that, like completely?

The first five episodes was not only the best noir I've seen in ages, but also a masterclass in editing, and just soaked in style and love for the genre. Then came the twist... and it pulled me out of the whole thing. I won't spoil it, but suffice to say, I'd appreciated the show a hell of a lot more, had it stayed within the confines of Film Noir tropes.

Solid, although it made me realise I’d be ok with just having this kind of detective story without that twist it has. It’s interesting but I’ve not seen enough good new detective films or tv stories to feel overstuffed by cliches.

I really liked this and the twist made me like it more. I could do without some of the story-line around the bad guys though.
